Mowing my lawn

I just noticed a thread on grass didn't bother reading it so thought here is as good of a place as anywhere to ask when I should cut my grass for the last time before winter.

Also how do I get the lines in it?

ThrushMotorsport 16th October 2012 10:56

Buy a rover, perfect lines from it, also picks up the grass, you should cut your grass about 6 times a year, about now is where the last cut should be, as when winter comes.. It won't really grow lol

Giraffe 16th October 2012 10:59

Instead of watering it as well, put Vodka or Whisky on it.

christoph 16th October 2012 11:01

The lines are created by which way you cut or roll it. Only cut it when it's dry otherwise it'll be shit.

I'm intrigued, why only 6 times??

you must work on a pitch/course or something, lol. either that or a gardener

pretty much what he said but i dunno about the six times a year rule.

its been pissing of rain here the last few days so i think one dry day and that's when it'll get cut (my bosses estate)

Jay_ 16th October 2012 11:13

6 times? bollocks.

I love the smell of freshly cut grass!:A:

Chris_ 16th October 2012 11:20

Use a chainsaw to trim the edges

Sam 16th October 2012 11:21

I did mowed the law possibly for the last time about 2 weeks ago, just before all the rain. All depends on the weather tbh.

P_Connor 16th October 2012 12:06

Surprised this hasn't already been said.......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Mz0G...eature=related

Seasonal cuts are 6-8 times a year, freshly cut grass smells nice, but really we used to do grass mid march to october, I prefer using flymo's.. But lines can be squigly if your shit with one, and you need to rake up your grass afterwards, but its much better in my view.

What a load of bollocks. Where do you get that figure from?

Grass gets cut whenever it gets too long.

This.. Must have cut mine about 15 times this year, easily! If id done it 6, by the time id cut it each time, the mower would struggle to get over it!

+1. I challenge you (without a fucking strimmer) to only cut my lawn 6 times a year. Leave it > 2 weeks over summer than the mower clogs practically!

ThrushMotorsport 16th October 2012 14:00

I loled, ok sir, obviously you do it for a living with your expertise and can define long grass with your electric plug in mower that can't get over slightly grown grass.

I take it you don't cut your average lawn then eh?

I have a petrol mower.. You don't have to be in the "business" to know when you need to cut your grass.. Maybe you have a ride on mower that can take down 6" tall grass, but most households have normal ones, which will take 3"ish of grass.

I lolled back at the gardener being facetious.

My mower, bought like millions of others, was from a shop that sells mowers, amongst other various household/diy items. I'm sorry it doesn't match the spec of your uber-i'm-a-fucking-gardener-motherfucker ride on, mow down forests v8 400bhp nitrous powered monstermower, but it doesn't.

Long grass to me is defined as something that looks untidy. Really long grass is something that looks untidy and is harder to cut (for my weedy Flymo).

I'm sorry our definitions differ. You're clearly the man to come to when I have some sort of garden wide horticultural crisis.

Bedford126 16th October 2012 14:13

I'm liking how my thread on cutting my lawn has turned into this I only wanted some bloody lines!!

Btw I have a flymo and it works wonders.

your lawn is shit. You need Cam's mower.

ThrushMotorsport 16th October 2012 14:18

I don't use a ride-on, as said, flymo, rover, and stihl strimmer, your presuming, so don't make a clown of yourself sweetheart.

Flymo has adjustable choke, so you can have it spinning the blade 3 times faster than it at its normal preset by chocking the choke/throttle cable open a bit more, its fantastic for first cut of season, technically... 8 cuts max in our seasons, that's what? One cut every 3 weeks in majority of the gardening season which is 7 months long at max depending on weather, if you think grass that comes up to your ankle/shin Is long then your a spastic, sorry but really, 15 times a year? You keep licking that window san.

Ross 16th October 2012 14:24

you're comparing apples with oranges - my post exaggerates my frustration of that. You're professional tool budget and the home users budget are vastly different. What your tools cope with, mine no doubt wont.

I'm sorry you find that so hard to understand. It would be a bit like me saying your a "spastic" because your saxo is slow.

lol. Really? How many back/front house gardens in the UK do you think maintain a garden with grass as long as your ankles, cupcake?

I want a lawn, not a fucking meadow. I want my dogs to play on it, not trip over in it. I don't want to take hay from it at the end of the season. I don't want the fucking animals of Farthing Wood in my back yard do I.

Edit: wait! "Location: Aberdeen"
THAT explains it. It's fucking DARK 9 months of the year there. No wonder you only cut 6 times a year.

What the actual fuck. You're the fucking spastic for not knowing how to use your and you're. Seriously.

matt_vtr_15a 16th October 2012 14:33

What are the benefits of only cutting the grass 6-8 times a year?

apart from having your own jungle..

For a back garden to look tidy and tie in with borders/planters/decking and paving etc that people may have grass is far too long once it reaches ankle height...

Surely it's personal preference?

To me it's like a girl having a full bush or a nicely trimmed and shaved tuppy fro!!

Rather it be trimmed every week or so than once a month...

No benefit, just the grass probably grows slower in Scotland...

I'll*

Hopefully it will never fill up then eh... Unlike your lawn mowers and grass bins, which must get really fucking full if you only cut the grass 6 times a year... All that shoulder height grass that your flymo chops down with ease...

Stefan_Wood 16th October 2012 14:38

Dad cuts the grass atleast once a week in summer so i doubt 6times is right :/
But he just goes up and down and the lines always looks spot on

It's an utter ball ache after 6 months of doing it.

One day, this forum will run out of things to argue about. But until that day, to battle!

matt_vtr_15a 16th October 2012 15:12

Backyard of my new place is decked and blockpaved with 2 x medium/large rectangles of grass..

I'm keeping one that I'll have to trim 6-8 x 4 times a year...

and the other is gonna be artificial for a putting/chipping green!! :y:
