I have to say something I'm afraid, I wouldn't risk that crank in an engine. It may have overall end to end balance, but the internal balance and counter-weighting are going to be way off, so the odds on failure are high.

K567 19th March 2013 08:08

what makes you say that sandy? are you seeing something im not?

AndySAXO 19th March 2013 10:27

I would of just got the standard crack, balance, and polished, checked for ovality. These cranks are very good standard cranks. But Looks like it going to be a good biuld! Good luck with it. :)

AndySAXO 19th March 2013 10:29

Few trusted engine builder out my way have warned me about lighten ect of these cranks. Not 100% sure on the in's and out's but was told not to do it.

K567 19th March 2013 10:43

I've spent a long time working on VAG motors in the past, especially the 1.8t and 12v vr6, and never had issues with working on stock cranks

looking around at a few french builders, some do it and some don't seems to be a french thing lol

AndySAXO 19th March 2013 11:17

I know people do it. But I took my crank to these people who looked at it and said to leave these cranks alone. Well bar from balance the crank with everything else I.e. blue printing. But not to knife edge it ect. Could be different with other cranks. But I showed him mine and they just said to balance and polish it ect.

Tom5190 19th March 2013 11:28

What sort or RPM are you looking for? i would use a lightened OEM crank either. Shell looks pretty awsome like and the rest of the spec sounds noice!

K567 19th March 2013 11:36

RPM isnt the goal, on the cams im using 7500 rpm is as far as theyll make anything.
accelleration is key, getting the rpm to lift freely is key reducing rotating mass and static drag through oil....

Im not after making high power, just power that is smooth, fully usable and the right amount for a balanced track car and daily runner ( when needed )

Tom5190 19th March 2013 11:46

Id go for a billet then or just stick with pulling it out of the flywheel/clutch.

Ross 19th March 2013 12:51

Dont forget the huge savings in the pullies too - over 1kg.

jpsaxo 19th March 2013 13:07

Mine rev's up more than quick enough with the standard crank ;)

blenky-vtr 19th March 2013 23:20

Right nice mate

Exhaust Update

Update
Been looking into manifolds for the car and have decided on this one

Maniflow Competition with additional flex joint and 200cel hiflow cat added.
Not cheap but worth it

Spent about 30mins on the phone with them, really good to chat to.

deano_123 20th March 2013 09:57

sounds like it will be a pretty awesome build

can you PM me some info on the maniflow manifold please

jpsaxo 20th March 2013 11:02

Get Mike Edwards to make you a custom jobbie up, cheaper than maniflow, longer primaries and better quality too :D

K567 20th March 2013 21:08

who's mike edwards?

K567 20th March 2013 21:25

wait im guessing edwardsmotorsport.com ?

Picked up Crank today looks really nicely done and feels a lot lighter, has been knife edged, flattened and balanced

then due to comments, spent hours looking into Frenchies and KE,L,B Cranks

End result... Its staying, I have found quite a few builds where they have been used, no one with any issues.
This one in particular seems to be very nice..

The only questions against are the end balance and how it effects harmonics at static rpms

To combat this I would suspect the use of either a fluid or stock harmonic damper would be best over moving to alloy pulleys, helping to maintain harmonic balance while still freeing up rotating mass... Opinions?

To be sure I am going to get it to a machine shop and get it re-balanced with full clutch, pulley, and rods/pistons

josh89vtr 20th March 2013 22:18

Niiiiiiiiice!! Really nice. Absolute best colour! Without a doubt. Slightly gelous

Somethings are now back on track.... Little bit of lovin

K567 13th April 2013 20:33

Well the other day was pistons n rods together...

Today spent a couple of hours on the block, crank in, pistons n rods in...

then spent another couple of hours on the Dash Loom taking the pugs from the Dash 2 and mating them up to a 24 pin M/F plug making it easier to fit

after that had tea and watched Doctor Who :)

K567 21st April 2013 19:15

RaceTech Dash 2 Installed, just a couple or wiring bits and some programming to do for sensors

Awaiting my loom back from SB so I can swap over to the DTA ecu

then its new engine in, new ITB setup, new gearbox, new clutch, new fuel system...

Hoping to have it all finished this week

K567 18th July 2013 23:06

Bit of an update
Ive been fannying back and forth for some time on whether or not to sell up or keep going

money ran tight after being out of work for too long, so now im back at the grind stone again i feel im at a better place for this to actually finish

So tonight after having my last fling with a Clio Cup 1?2 on the way home.... I do really love whooping on kids

I decided its time to put the car up on stands and start the stripping......

Nope, not to sell up, but to finally finish of this engine and get it in

so over the next couple of days the old faithful stock bottom with the lad head n cam will come out

and in will go the new engine, clutch and box ive been building, parting out, selling over the last couple of months...

Going to strip everything back and give it a good clean and a lick of paint
change some of the wiring
re do a couple of bits and bats that need some maintenance

and all being well start it up some time early next week to start mapping, well give or take a few days when the wife finally pops the young one out 9 days late n counting....
