My own C2 turbo is nearing completion now, using the stock ECU (of course) :-)

The shell is solid, which is a bonus. The exterior paint is OK. Its had bits resprayed in varying quality, but its decent from a few yards. The body kit has suffered a little with sitting out in the sun, but I've got enough spares to sort most if not all of it.

The chip wizards mapped ecu lives on! If the predator/megasquirt doesn't turn out to be useful, you may have to map it again...

Chipwizards 27th May 2016 22:17

They ('Predator') used to have issues driving the dash, the temp gauge in particular. Don't know if that was ever sorted.
The fool who used to sell them ridiculed my suggestion that it wouldn't work properly and told everyone that it would work fine but ended up having to give people their money back. It would have been easier if he'd just listened....

Keep the ECU you've got. You keep stock diagnostics, stock wiring, stock components (besides the obvious MAP sensor and injectors) and it has proper knock control, unlike all but the expensive higher-end aftermarket ECUs. What's not to like? OK, they don't have closed loop boost control, but you can fit a boost controller if that bothers you.

When do we get to see the c2 in action wayne?

Hopefully Saturday at FCS if you're going.

I have setup an overboost protection so that it reduces the throttle opening if boost goes too high for too long and it backs it off to around 40% opening, thus limiting the boost to 0.35 bar max, tapering off as revs rise of course. Anyway, I've set it a little too close so it occasionally comes in when spanking it. I'll still be tracking it if there's space free but I may not get time to fix the throttle issue before then.

Apart from that it drives mint, considerably better than the standard car. Smoother, quieter, easier to drive because it pulls from 1000 rpm now where before it just made more noise and didn't go anywhere. Just a faint whistle and a little wheeze when backing off to change gears. So far it doesn't appear to use much, if any, more fuel either. I can't tell 100% yet because I haven't used a full tank to compare mileage but it certainly isn't bad.

Well pleased with it. :-)

In comparison to what; all those successful turbo conversion that you have perfected?

Lol, didn't predict you'd churp up and act like a bellend.
It was a joke as OP has done the same to me in an extent, put your keyboard down.

Nothing to see here.

Still enjoying the low boost, on the poo engine. MOT due in winter and it'll be off the road.

Only real updates are that I've trialled some 20mm spacers (just on the front) and like the look. So will fit the rear ones when I pull my finger out and order some studs for the hubs.

Went for a run with some of the 'crew'

In fact, been for a couple of runs out - shame it couldn't be more frequent with kids/family/work etc.

Although I have finally posted my rods & gudgeon pin/piston to my friend overseas. He'll machine the little end and fit some new bushes, to finalise the forged build components. Winters project is to put these into the spare block (already honed) and take out the current engine to use it's parts - manifold, sump etc.

SimpleJoee 4th September 2016 10:12

Saucy.

sri_130 21st March 2017 22:14

Reeto, small update.

As mentioned, I had acquired some forged pistons & a block. Along with some forged rods that were the wrong small end size. These have been sorted, so I was ready to crack on.

I purchased it from my good friend Mr Craig as so:

One of the rods was bent (standard rods) yet the pistons are the slightly oversized Wossner ones.

Stripped down and removed everything & my old man showed me how to glaze the bores a tad, even though they weren't as bad as we'd thought:

I've never touched a bottom end (oo-er) before, so this is all good learning for me.

I cleaned up the surfaces and the finished product is pretty neat.

Despite bending a rod, the block is fine. The crank looks decent. Only other issues worth noting were a missing oil jet & the main bearing on the side that the rod had bent, was a bit worse for wear:

Looks like it had been hammering at it. The lining was exposed and stress cracked. It had almost become egg shaped.

Anyway, Mr GMC sorted me out with some parts & advice:

Fitted a new set:

Surprisingly the damaged main bearings were ACL, but nevermind.

The block had been painted a couple of times, so after a day of chiselling and picking through the old layers, I managed to get a coat of silver enamel on there. Not the best job in the world, but hey ho.

I had a spare day off (with no kids) so managed to get the old engine out:

Started to strip it down and compared the GT17 against the GT22....

It's massive! The GT17 is in great shape though - zero play. So it will be for sale shortly.

At this point, I came across some hurdles.

- On the forged pistons, one of the oil 'mop-up rings' (the little last one) is deformed. Whilst my old man thinks we might get away with it, you can't actually tell whether it seats correctly when the piston is in. So, I've had to contact Wossner about getting a ring-set. This will set me back £40 or so, but also a fair bit of time.

- On the forged rods, it looks like someone has lost one of the arp washers that accompany the arp rod bolts. They replaced it with an oversized spring washer. I'd rather not take any chances, so ordered full set of washers from the states.

But, 3 pistons have been successfully installed at least:

Hopefully I'll get the old engine completely stripped this week so I can make a catalogue of what else is required.

Awesome update mate I bet it's satisfying seeing it all come together

Gabbastard 25th March 2017 14:44

40quid well worth the hassle if an oil control ring is fucked and youd need to strip it all down again. I like the sound of the GT17, as Ive always fancied a turbo setup that just goes, and isnt a bitch to drive or hard spooling.

Chipwizards 26th March 2017 02:16

Make a bid on the GT17 then.... :-)

sri_130 26th March 2017 10:21

Just give the money directly to Wayne, so he can offset the remap cost.
