Wireless

Instead of filling Lukes thread full of shit i thought to start a new thread would be better.

Anyway, i have had this new laptop for about 2-3 weeks now and want to make it wireless so i can use it over the house.

My question is.. What exactly do i need to buy, i dont want the most expensive stuff, just whatever i need to do the job.

Many thanks on any help.

Yeah, Louise is having major problems with them at the moment too saying there activation service is down - for 4 days now.

Right mate, basically because you are on cable you will need a Wireless Router (make sure it ISN'T the ADSL one). It's the one for a cable broadband you need - they are around £40 - £50. I have just bought a Belkin one for £39.99 from PCWorld and the Netgear one is £50 - personally I would get the Netgear for ease of use as the Belkin seems a bit complicated.

When you get that, you need to link the wireless router with your cable modem.

Have you got a computer too?

ALL instructions of what to do are on the CD, so it will be pretty easy to follow I think.

Make sure you make it secure though....anymore help, just PM me mate.

Luke all together there is 4 computers, and my laptop in the house, i only want the laptop to be wireless, doing this wont mess around with the other PC's internets will it, and will i need to set it up with the 'main' comupter where all the router etc is connected atm?

Does the wireless router replace my current one?

Basically the original lead that goes from the modem into the computer at the moment, needs to go from the computer into the back of the router (instructions will be show this) and then one lead goes from the modem to the router so in theory you are using both.

b0t13 17th November 2007 17:03

it goes along side the modem

Payney 17th November 2007 17:06

Could someone get links to the wireless router i need please. do i need anything for laptop?

Luke 17th November 2007 17:09

Linkage

That's all you need mate, that one is capable of what you will just use internet for.

I can't find the Netgear one. You won't need anything else...

Payney 17th November 2007 17:25

Just looked for 'Wireless' on argos, and the netgear ones are like over £100 so i think i'll go with that one you've showed me.

Cheers Luke, repped.

EDIT: Balls won't let me rep you.

BENSAX3 17th November 2007 17:54

i have a netgear router and cannot fault it. the instruction are so easy it is impossible to go wrong it practicly doesit for you

Payney 17th November 2007 18:34

I might go to PC world and get a NetGear one if they are £50, in Argos they are like £99.99 lol...

Will have a look tomorrow if i have time.
