someone must know the answer

are rear brake shoes self adjusting?

i.e. do they move out themselves or do you have to calibrate them whilst fitted?

thanks

sam

Predator_R32 7th March 2008 00:31

do you mean the piston which pushes out???

SAM33R 7th March 2008 00:35

na mate, you know the shoes have to be near the drum so you get better braking

i put some shoes into my bros car today and a cylinder for it to clear MOT

not sure if theres enough braking efficiency at the rear drums as i didnt remember adjusting the shoes outwards, i was assumnig that they self adjust as you push the brake or is that bullshit?

thanks

sam

Predator_R32 7th March 2008 00:39

so with removing and replacing the cylinder did you bleed the brakes??

SAM33R 7th March 2008 00:44

erm  need to do that tomorrow lol

still confused as to whether i needed to adjust the shoes before mounting the drum, it had a tooth gear on the shoe and the housing it mounts on...

help me :( lol

SAM33R 7th March 2008 01:04

anyone else ?

please

Predator_R32 7th March 2008 01:14

i havent done drum brakes since i had my ax about 5 year ago mate, i do have a haynes manual though ill have a look in there andlet you know

definately bleed the brakes though

SAM33R 7th March 2008 01:36

thanks mate, help much appreciated...

its just well frustrating and i thought i'd done everything right but then realised that they might have needed adjusting

:y:sam

Nah theyre self adjusting. just pull the handbrake a few times then repeatedly pump the pedal to allow them to adjust.

Gabbastard 7th March 2008 02:57

though theres a manual adjuster down the bottom if braking is inadequate.

New shoes need manually adjusting when you first fit them , adjust them up as much as you can , WHILST leaving the drum free to spin . They can be little sods to adjust correctly and you may need to pull the drum off a couple of times .

how do i adjust them as there a bastard to move out

Predator_R32 7th March 2008 11:58

actually just looking at the haynes gabbs is right, just says to depress the pedal several times

you bled the system today??

SAM33R 7th March 2008 12:01

thanks mate :y: very much appreciated, hope i can read it lol :)

Predator_R32 7th March 2008 12:26

sorry mate i edited the post

bleed the system, does the hand brake work ok??

SAM33R 7th March 2008 12:45

yeah im about to bleed it now pred

i dont have no hose pipe though to cover it

im just thinkin the spongyness is cos i didnt adjust them to start off with

thanks

sam

SAM33R 7th March 2008 12:45

and handbrake is tight and works :y:

Predator_R32 7th March 2008 13:52

yeah probablies down to the brakes not being bled mate

SAM33R 8th March 2008 01:46

done all that today, pedal feels so much better now :y:

last problem is the handbrake, there no play in the handbrake lever at all

i think the shoes need to be adjusted, i.e. pushed out by remving the drum so there just about touching the inner drum when its put back on...

there is a gear mechanism of some sort inside but not too sure how to go about it...

thanks for help

sam

Mark51 8th March 2008 01:52

^^ you need to adjust the rear shoes so they are just very very slightly touching the drum mate. has the handbrake cable been adjusted in the past?
