Right i know this might sound silly but how do i check if i need gear box oil? my dad asked if i checked it lastnight (because erm i could smell something weird then realised it was lack of oil in my engine woops lol) but i dont know how to check it, where and how to top it up
so can someone explain to me in my dumbass language please lol

silveryvtr 6th October 2005 14:44

is it not just the same as normal oil?

pug_boe 6th October 2005 14:45

hmm i dont think so lol but my dad went mad on me because iv never checked it in the two years iv had it lol (but i did have the linkage sorted in feb so they should have checked)

silveryvtr 6th October 2005 14:48

can you not just pore it in the normal oil tank because the oil travels round the engine?
i am sure lol my boyfriend checks the oil and stuff in my car so i wouldnt know

pug_boe 6th October 2005 14:49

um i dont know, my parents dont seem to think so lol anyone else? lol

Scott 6th October 2005 14:50

erm no its vastly different.

Boe have a look at the premium how to guides on changing the gear box oil, tells you all you need to know.

Engine and gearbox oil never come in contact.

pug_boe 6th October 2005 14:54

lol thanks scott, iv just had a quick look (im in uni i cant take it all in lol) and theres even pictures woohoo lol, do you reckon like my dad could do it. hes not brill on cars but i dont really wana waste more money on my car by putting it in a garage.or if i took it to the garage rougly how much would it cost?

Scott 6th October 2005 14:57

really easy to do, even a garage should charge much to check and top up if necessary. THe only thing you need is the square key bit (same us sump nut key).

Basically a case of jack up car remove wheel, remove arch liner, unscrew top plug and top up if necessary.

silveryvtr 6th October 2005 14:57

lol id probubly kill my car so thats why brian does mine.

pug_boe 6th October 2005 15:00

your supposed to change it every few years aint you? iv had it about 2 and half years and iv done roughly 30,000 miles in it but iv never checked it and the garage who did the linkage - well they were pretty naff, i only went in for the clutch and they broke the linkage!! (not my usual garage)
what il prob do then is go to the bloke who lives nr me - hel do anything for 4 cans of lager (hes an alcholic lol)

silveryvtr 6th October 2005 15:17

well i have had my car since i was 15 so that will be atleast 3 years and i havent had to do any mechanics on it at all becuse my unlces and my dad and boyfriend have all done it for me

pug_boe 6th October 2005 15:21

lol im getting good,iv changed a tyre and i occasionally lol do the oil, water and windscreen wash ooo and i changed my backlights too lol, but my dad dont help or advise, he just screams which winds me up so i scream back then the job aint finishd

silveryvtr 6th October 2005 15:31

i can change my own tiers and all that too but i just dont choose to lol i put the blond girl act on and they all fall to their knees and do it for me haha

Simo 6th October 2005 15:58

Its all there in the how-to guide Boe... its dead simple, but not something I can see you having a go at, if im honest.

If your gearbox isnt making a whirring noise, then Id leave it... the gearbox oil cant escape, unlss you have a leaky seal.

Engine oil needs topping up etc more regualrly as it can be burnt in the engine and therefore disappears.

pug_boe 6th October 2005 16:38

lmao im not doing it myself simo, are you crazy mun! lol
ye my gearbox is making a dodgy noise, the gears change fine jst it makes a weird like er meatl noise - i get the bloke to do it down the rd
