theres a sticky with all the information, easiest way is too look at the ecu and the oil dipstick location.

no, it was to comply with emmision regulations, hence why you pay cheaper tax on the 98bhp models, and on paper you get more mpg.

makes a difference in the real world, people used to argue that on here, driving both cars a 90bhp and a 98bhp, the 98bhp is quicker, and along side, the 98bhp always pulled away.

early mk2's which still had the single plug ecus dont have plastic throttle bodies.
all VTR's registered after march 2001 were 3plugs.
