if you can get a drawing together mate with sizes and that and angles go to a small fabrication firm,

i am a fabricator welder and work for a fabricaton company and we would deffently do this sort of work.

I've thought about doing thi myself. I'm reasonable with a welder and have access to a pipe bender.
Is it as simple as I think?
What type of metal should be used (and thickness)?

all you need tools wise is

Pipe bender, or you can just cut the angles on the pipes and weld them together

mig welder with gas would be best but ark welding could be used

grinder, with cutting disks and sanding pads

drill for drilling the pads


Material to use would be probs 40mm pipe/tube with a 3mm wall thickness that would be more than strong enough for the job.

the pads you could use 3mm plate

also i think it's best if you reinforce the floor where you are securing the cage to the floor, for example weld a bigger piece of 3mm plate onto the floor then weld the pad ontop of this, it will mkae it more secure.


if i was doing it in my saxo i would totaly strip out the car like seats and carpet and weld it in, also it would be better to put all the parts of the cage in loose and then tack them together inside the car then if you can remove the cage from the car and weld it up in stages, becasue if you welded it up strait away all the joints would be to hot and this could warp the cage which could lead to you haveing problems when putting it in.

also it would be good if you could start by makeing the basic outline of the cage then take all the measurements for the other parts like the bars to go across the doors.

i havent really got any experience of fitting these cages or how you secure them to the car but hopefully it helped you :A:
