More exhaust questions.. (Quiet, silencers?)

Now i've done what i wanted to do on the outside of the car am going to start on the engine.... For now i've got my air filter, next in line is my exhaust system. I will be buying a manifold in the future but for now i just want an exhaust system. I have a Mk2 vts. Basically i want a exhaust that is quiet. I don't want it to be really loud, something with a nice tone thats hardly noticeable maybe a nice idle tone and when i do put my foot down in a hurry a slight roar but other than that hardly noticeable as i don't want to hear it when on motorways. My gf car has a very good example of this and i will try and get a vid if she makes it here before dark so you can see the tone. I've read from past posts that Magnex are reasonable?
With my centre section, can i leave the silencers in? (as this does make the system quieter doesn't it?) or does this restrict performance? As i was hoping to run cams in the future.....

Cheers in advance

i have a supersprint straight through centre pipe on my car with a standard back box and its still very quiet considering its got a 4-2-1 manifold as well heres a vid, on idle its quite and driving around it doesn't sound out of the ordinary
