Squeaking from underneath the car!!

When I first start my car there seems to be a squeaking noise underneath the car. It doesn't seem to do it when I go over bumps but when I accelerate and the car jumps forward a bit. Changing gear also makes a slight squeaking noise on certain gear changes. Any ideas on what this could be?

This comes up a lot... Could be the Joint on your exhaust... Im not a mechanic by any means, ive just had this for a while now ( Still aint sorted it ) Is it like a metal rubbing metal squeek.... Could be heat shield rubbing too. I was told by a mechanic though, That there is some sort of spring ( dont take my repeat of his words by gospel )... but he said it allows the exhaust to flex or something.... That maybe nackered and rubbing, or squeeking. Pisses me off actually Im checking it out when i get my new exhaust done. Its like when the car slightly jaults forward and back isnt it ? .. Squeek in - Squeek out.

ye like carl says it more than likely the flange..or migh even be the alternator adjusting pulley..whn the barings go it tends to squeek..you need to get ur head down so u can see the flange or pulley..and gt someone to rev or put it in gear and try to pull off whilst handbrake is on..

I think it could be something to do with the exhaust. It does it at quite random times but does seem to do it more when i accelerate a bit and jerk forward and it seems to get quieter or even stop completely after i've been driving for a while. I'm not a mechanic and don't really no enough so not sure how i'm gonna fix it but it is quite annoying.

say what ! lol....

You tried taking it off an rebuilding and spraying it with WD 40..... I think the way forward mate would be to get a new flange...

Another thing i noticed the other day is that it nearly always does it when i first set off then gets quieter after driving for a while, but the other day when it was raining it was fine from the start. Maybe this could mean that the water lubricated whatever it is that's squeaking. Any ideas it's really annoying me? Thanks

j_a_lyons 7th June 2010 23:59

Also it may not be under the car, someone suggested the drive belt. But i don't see how water would have stopped the squeaking if it was.

I get the same on the vtr when its cold. When i touch the throttle to pull away it squeaks a little. Got to be something on the exhaust!

j_a_lyons 8th June 2010 00:09

Mine does it in any weather :S and it seems to be related to car jerking (when i press and release the accelerator in low gear it squeaks quite loudly) and when I pull off and sometimes when i change gear, to do with the slight jerk sometimes when changing gear. It doesn't do it when i rev not in gear so wouldn't hav thought it's the exhaust for me. But stops after driving for a while most of the time and also when i rains.

Carlvtr88 8th June 2010 11:08

Its the exhaust flange people.. When you accelerate the engine moves a little.... and so should the exhaust with it... If theres no flex inyour exhaust then it wil just make this annoyin creaking noise, and yes it does go away with about 10 - 15 mins of driving because everything is hot and has expanded... Probably taking away any movement at all.... It is the exhaust flange. What im having done is the flange stripped down... gasket replaced, and new bolts on the flange to slacken the tightness of my springs.....cause on my car they were dead tight (No back and fourth spring at all in the coil)

how much does a new flange cost?

citroen_saxo_vtr 1st July 2010 19:31

Mine does this and really does my head in also it does it slightly over speed bumps and its not the exhaust because i have replaced all of mine. I have no idea what it is........... anyone find a cure il be happy lol.
