How to remove speedometer without removing the steering wheel Guide and pictures.
 

Ok first off all this is the lazy mans way of removing the speedometer so you can either change dials, the whole thing or the surround.

Disconnect your battery.

I only thought of the idea of making a guide once i had changed my dials and realigned them as well, but you get the idea.

Firstly your need these (below) especially number 15 (t15) as its the one your need through the whole job.



Secondly your need to take the steering wheel surround off:
This envolves two more screws and it takes a few seconds to take it apart. Keep the screws separate if you can they are different.



It will then look like this:


After the above your need to take the above steering wheel surround out, this is not secured as the screws you just took out connect to this piece.



DA DA!! Next piece out and ready to move onto the most annoying part.



This is the most time consuming part as it just took me ages to decide how to get to one screw. The surrounding is kept in place by four screws two above as the picture shows and the other two are underneath the plastic at the very bottom.
The best way to sho the location is to look at the end of the allen key and match this to the underneath of the silver plastic, one screw hear and one the opposite end.

The screw on the left is easy to get out it took a minute at tops, the second one to the right is the killer as the whole point in this guide is to not remove the steering wheel and not to touch the airbags. Do what you want to get it out its up to you drill a hole, drill it out whatever you find best but its not that difficult, i managed to drill a small hole into the old surround and remove the screw and simply not replace it when the new surround was in place.


After the love affair with that screw you just had the surround simply comes out of place. Tilt it to one angle and pull it through the steering wheel. (it will not get damaged it fits fine)


Your then have something that looks like this, there is three more screws holding this into place, their easy to remove and in easy sight too. (bottom left, middle top and bottom right)


Once you have the screws out, again pull through the steering wheel:



Their are two wires located on the back of the unit you will need to remove them before pulling the unit. Theirs a clip that your need to slide down to get them out, its easy once you see it.

Now you have the speedometer and their are no more screws to encounter so your all good to do the rest of whatever you wanted.

Afterthoughts on doing this were its not fun! It is in some ways less stressful to just remove the steering wheel. That one screw is in a hell of a location!!

I also had problems with the needles not being in the right place after moving them, but that was simple because i had moved them to far down whilst pratting about trying to get them out. to fix this simply turn the dial clock wise to the end, you will feel how much you have moved the needle out and then you can push it back to how it was. Do all this without the battery on, as for some reason it will bring the needles back right down again and your be peed!

One more thing when replacing the surround make sure the glass is clean, i replaced everything and then decided to notice their was a piece of tisse in the bottom corner.

The main reason i did it was because i wanted a silver outline around the speedometer and to change the dial colour to red.

Surely you could just use a satnav, see how far out the speedo is.

Then from that adjust the needle accordingly.

Say the speedo is 5mph is out, measure the distance between 20mph and 25mph to get X, then move the needle forward X amount?

when i put my needles back on they were all slightly out. you have to take reference to where the needles were sitting at before you took them off. was a bit of a long process for me adjusting the dials, taking for a drive, adjusting dials, taking a drive.... etc

just followed this.. have the dials partially out..
have disconnected 1 of the blocks, but the other wnt disconnect

Why not remove the wheel?

Just unplug the battery and leave for 5 minutes. Then remove the wheel (Takes about 5 mins) and unplug the airbag module.

Much simpler than having to drill holes to reach screws.

have removed all screws, that was simple.. was easy enough to get everything off..
and managed to disconnect the block now :)
but dials still seem to not be working argh..
both blcoks look fine, and the connector bits on the diasl look fine

For the sake off one bolt, or three if you have an airbag, I really don't see why you'd leave the wheel on.

But apart from that, good guide mate.

Its a good guide I do it a slightly different way though in that I undo the 3 13mm bolts under the steering column.It then drops down giving you easier access/more room etc.

was easy enough to do without taking wheel off mate, made next to no diff it still being on, this guide was very helpful :y:

yea battery back in lol, everything connected up, and still not working..
i think its faulty dials, due to only part of them not working ie revs, speedo, time, miles and petrol gauge..

the warning lights etc all still work..
am assuming thats the 2 seperate blocks??
if was a fuse or bad earth they wudnt work at all?

and they kept cutting out before, but i hit the top of dash and theyd come back on after a few knocks, now theres nothing hence why thought was dodgy connection

Does sound like a bad connection. I'd remove them, try cleaning the connectors a bit, try and look for any loose pins, etc.

already done, took apart and connectors looked fine :/
cleaned tem out to make sure no crap in there too, and still isnt working

Could be the voltage regulator then on the circuit board,don`t know if they`re available seperately though mate.

tried a mates dials in my car and they worked perfectly..
so looks like it is the dials :/
