Fronting....my opinion on it!
Apologies for the long post but worth a read....
Hello I have seen a lot of threads on here recently where people are happy to admit that they have insured thier car in a parents (or older persons) name as the policyholder and put themselves on as the additonal driver. In almost all circumstances this is illegal! You will likely get away with it until you have to make a claim and thats where the issue begin...First off, someone from the insurance company will look at your claim and see a 50 year old policyholder and his 17 year old son as the named driver.....ALARM bells much! Basically, fronting is illegal unless... 1. You actually are just an additional (casual) driver and the policyholder does drive it more than you do. Lets face it, how many self respecting parents are driving a saxo VTR as thier main car? 2. When you took out the premium, you were asked 'Who is the main driver of the vehicle' and you changed the answer from the default (policyholder - your dad etc) to the additional driver (you). This would likely increase the premium to the same as if you took out the policy in your own name however. You may think you can get away with it and you probably will if you don't need to claim but is it worth the risk? Picture this....you rear end a 50k merc and the claims person from the insurance company checks over your claim and decides you are in fact the main driver so voids the policy. Who is now going to have to foot the bill for the merc you just crashed into.....ummmm probably you!! I know you can save a massive amount by fronting but its simply not worthit I also know how expensive insurance is for a 17 year old, even on a 1.1 but if you cant afford it then you shouldnt be driving! We were all 17 once and we all paid a shit load for our first policy and years down the line with lots of no claims under our belts, insurance is much cheaper. At 17 you are a massive risk to insurance companies, you are inexperienced and driving a saxo which is probably thier biggest claim....why should they give you a cheap premium?? Its all about the risk Why do you think insurance is soooo expensive these days, not just for 17 year olds but for everybody....maybe because people were fronting and the insurance companies had to foot the bill...maybe due to fake injury claims.....maybe due to uninsured drivers!! By you fronting, you are actually making it worse for other people and generations to come meaning everyone has to pay more for thier insurance If you cant afford to get insured legally then dont drive for fuck sake!!! Just my 2p worth |
Some people dont have a choice, not everyone can afford to pay thousands to be insured. Some need to be able to drive for work etc.

I agree totally with this as it pisses me off to know i struggle to pay for a 1.1 at 19 and 17 year olds are driving round in VTR's and other cars when they aint paying shit... are insurance is that high as you (rich twat's) sorry for being rude :) keep crashing your very nice and expensive cars all because you cant handle the power :)

The reason I took a 1.1 as my first car is insurance. I couldn't afford to go and insure a VTR, so I'm spending a year or two in a car that is underpowered.
But at least I'm legal. Really bugs me to be honest that people drive VTR/S without techincally being insured... There are always choices.. Can't get insured on a VTR? Then buy a 1.1, or another car. Or even use the bus until you are older. |
I had an integra type R as my first car.
I didn't front. I was the policy holder. If you can't really afford to insure a fast car you shouldn't buy one. :y: x |
Well said Devil...
I work in an Insurance Broker's and I see this so many times on this forum. Just makes me wonder how many people on here are legal, let alone everywhere else in the UK. Fronting is illegal and you are likely to get away with it, unless as devil said, you make a claim. Then the insurance company will pay out but will no doubt be chasing you to reimburse them. |
lol @ this thread, most know itl illegal yes, but it isnt going to stop ppl, if insurers didnt charge so much ppl wouldnt be forced to do this, and btw, good luck proving that the second driver who had a crash is fronting, it would cost more then payout is worth, the insurer's just payout instead...........yes the noobs put our prices up, but no more then any other noobs who crash their self insured cars, those that self insure put the young driver crash statistics up which inturn makes it harder for other noobs to self insure. its all a viscious circle and they insurers still make shitloads of money, if you can manage to save some ££ on the insurers part i say good for you....
and i drive my car insured by myself before you start wingeing. |
On the subject, its the same with modifications, 90% of insurance company's will ask if the car is modified from the factory spec, this included, air filters and manifolds/exhausts, anything that bumps the power up. If you dont mention them and you crash, your policy can again be void! Who is paying the bills then?! You are!!! I declared mine, and it does put insurance up but i would rather pay for my parts to be insured as well, and in the event (Haven forbid!) that i do crash i will get my car repaired or money to replace it! Uninsured drivers really piss me off!

OMG this devil guy do you own an insurnace company or something becuase you seem to think you know everything about insurance, you say everyone had it hard at 17, they did not have to pay anywhere near 4 fuckin grand for a 1.1! Its a bit sad that your 23 and you can only afford a VTR get a VTS you sad little man
|
The minority ruin it for the majority, yet again. People wonder why their insurance premiums are so high, it's because young drivers have a bad rep due to people who do this :( I drive a VTR and I'm 18 but the car is in my name and the insurance policy is in my name, if you can't afford to run a car legally, then don't bloody do it!!

Good read, totally agree!
as I'm 17 i know its a bitch to get insured but its like 200 quid more to be insured on your own policy, which is so much safer in case you do have to make a claim! :y: |
I was incredibly lucky and got my insurance very very cheap, because quin messed up.
Other from quin as my first insurer i would have almost deffiniatly have to front my insurance because it would have been 2k+ I don't care if people front at all, its there chioce. Like Munkyboy said he went for a low grouped car, making his insurance alot cheaper. It annoys me when some 17 year old gets a VTR and moans about how much their insurance is, just shut up. |

I don't own an insurance company and i don't work for one. I can easily afford to insure a faster car, im 23, 3 years no claims and 5 years driving experience I could insure an imprezza or an evo or most other group 20 cars The reason I don't is that I don't feel the need to have a stupidly fast car as I walk to work therefore only use it on the weekend, hence having a banger of a saxo If I drove to work or drove for a living I would have a brand new car, something with some more power etc Trust me buddy, most people on here had a pay a shit load for their first insurance. Mine was on a Nova 1.4, cost me £1800TPFT. I know its not 4 grand but its still more than I had. I paid monthly and worked my arse off to have a car I needed a car as I lived in a village and job prospects are better if you drive Also, learn to spell you sad little man :homme: |
My dad owns a vtr, and he is self respecting 58 year old. :-) I agree with the others though. Im old enough to be truthful on my policy but they couldnt prove you where fronting unless your a total dope and admit it? I used my dads 1.6 sierra when I passed my test at 17 quite often, but it werent my car nor was I the main driver so if I crashed and it set off alarm bells, then they couldnt prove anything..... as I werent the main driver. How can they prove these young guys are? At least they have insurance and if they crash into YOU you will get paid out. Better than half the cunts around here who dont.
|
A lot of my mates front, i don't agree with it but i can see why they did
Many people want to know how i get my insurance on a VTS at 18, and a lot of people recon i lie.. Just shop around |
Well said tbh. I paid £1700tpft on my first car, it's gone down ever since and i have 6 years no claims. Best way.
