How do i change my alternator belt? PHOTOS TO HELP ARE UP
 

I have searched but to no avail,

how do i change the alternator belt on my 03 plate vtr, i have the new belt anyone have a quick step by step i can follow plan to do it on monday.

alright mate i did mine recently it's quite fiddly to be fair.

rough guide but it's hard to say without pics


Basicaly there are 2 bolts you've got to slacken off first, one underneath the alternator (pivot bolt, about 15mm) and one above which is pretty hidden but you can just about get a spanner in there (pinch bolt, about 13mm)

You should see an adjusting screw comming down underneath with a long thread on it going through a bracket, should have an allen key head. You've got to screw this bolt in (clockwise direction) to relieve the tension.

Once the belt is slack enough, take old one off and put new one on, and then turn the adjuster screw anticlockwise to tighten the belt. You want about 5-10mm of play in the belt on its longest stretch off the pulleys if that makes sense lol

Tighten up the other 2 bolts you loosended earlier then u should be good to go. If its too tight you will probs hear a whining noise, if so then just slacken the belt off slightly

had a quick look today and took a photo as not sure what bolts to loosen off so here are the photos if someone can tell me what needs to be undone and where the tensioner bolt is?

Bottom picture iirc a little further down that bracket in the middle there is a screw which you can get a 4 or 5mm allen key bit in to take the tension off the alternator bracket to slacken it up to get the belt off. It is fiddly

You may find that over time it has seized and you may need a new tensioner bracket putting on, first id spray some wd40 on it let it soak in, then try abit later

Yeah it's hard to tell from the pics and its hard to explain! Ill try and grad a couple of pics tommorow showing the bolts etc

Its the bolt on the right in this picture here, slacken that.

Then above the belt, there is an adjuster, you just slacked the nut on that then you can turn the adjuster screw to tighten or loosen.

Not that fiddly should be able to do it without even jacking the car up,

2 bolts to slacken, turn adjuster, retighten bolts

lol what a twat i am! I got pics and edited them of how to do it, but obviosuly i've got a vts, i forgot you had a vtr! and I no its def different for that. ill have a look and see what it says in the haynes manual

You're changing the alternator belt? .

That's easy, I donno what these are telling you =/

sorry to resurrect an old thread but I can see from this the big bolt you slacken but where is the other supposed smaller fiddly hard to find one you have to slacken before turning the screw in the bracket under the alternator?

I suppose you're talking about the M8 nut near the upper bracket which you have to loosen to adjust the belt tension,it's a little hidden but quite accessible to undo anyway.

Yep my mechanic showed me the one's to get the spanners on but apparently one of them was missing think it was the adjuster screw so no wonder I was perplexed.
He had something that wasn't the right one but would work anyway then tightened it a little will see tomorrow if it has cured it but probably a tired pulley or tensioner.
