Right.. For years i have wanted a rottweiler.. Iv wanted one for absolutly ages.. Always nagged for one, and my mum has always said "the day you come home with a dog, is the day you no longer have a home.."

Well.. My mate has offered me a Rottie pup.. FREE..

Do you think id be pushing my luck bringing one home? I mean we used to have 2 dogs until they died, so its not like she doesnt like them...

How could anyone say no?

My mum said the same, so went out got a kitten of my mate, was 3 weeks old (i know har har har kitten lol but things are better then dogs :homme: )
anyways my mum said same as your's, after few days, was like another member of the family and now 1 year down the line, my mum loves the little furball lol

I doubt she would kick me out.. I mean we have plenty of room in the garden, im a joiner, so it wouldnt take long to knock it up a run and an outdoor kenel for when im out, so it doesnt shit on the kitchen floor.. Not like the house is too small for it either..

What kinda weekly costs am i looking at for feeding one?

My ex had a staffy, and i know that could put a fair bit of food away...

Also.. Do you think it would be okay, Our house kind of has an inset bit, where theres an extention on 1 bit, kinda making the house L shape, but then theres a neighbours house, so theres a square between them with a little coal shed on.. If i knocked that down, made a brick or wood kenel, then put a fence and a gate across, so he had a run when he was abit bigger... Just so he can poo outside if i cant take him to work one day..

its her house and if she doesnt want any pets you should respect that, however i dout she would kick you out but she could quite easily give the dog away which would be unfair on the pup.

Best case scenario - you get the dog you always wanted.
Worst case scenario - take it back to your mate.
I would risk it. Only one way to find out.

while the pup is young and still growing, it needs as much protein as possible. so scrambled egg, tuna, chicken etc...

at the age the pup is at it will need 3 meals a day so scrambled egg in the morning, biscuits with either tuna eggs or anythin like that in the afternoon and same again at night ( anything full of protein basically).

it wont cost you much at all. the main thing the dog will need is time to be spent with it.

aslong as its dry and theres no damp it would be fine. although he would need a run big enough for him to stretch his body and have a little walk around ( when hes fully grown ). also always make sure he has fresh water every time you feed him.

never take him for a walk atleast an hour before or after feeding him, if you did it could cause the dog an early death.

if you was to have your dinner and youve got some left over...give it the dog, it wont hurt it in any way but dont go out of your way to make sure the dog has some. if theres non left then tough.

also be very careful of who you let know the dogs name because people will steal him believe it or not. use a distinctive name that you wouldnt usually call a dog, and never ever leave him tied up outside of a shop or anything because he'll be gone when you come out.

So the walking thing.. do you mean after a walk... Leave it a while before i feed him? Or dont feed him, then take him straight on a walk??

Plenty of country side close by, and a 5 mile stretch of beach for me to talk him on walks on.. So he wouldnt be short of a good long walk at least 6 days a week anyway..

The kenel would be off the floor, id also put some kingspan in to keep some heat in, and its all waterproof aswell, plus abit of bedding.. I could make it so he sleeps at one side, and walks in from another, so theres a few meters of dryness before his actual bed..

What about when he is grown for food? Stuff like meat, with biscuits and stuff? any particular dog food that would be better?

When we had a boarder collie, my mum would feed her biscuits, and pedagree chum meat and jelly all mixed together..

if you take him out around when hes due a feed, leave it atleast an hour before you feed him.

or if you have just fed him leave it atleast an hour before he goes for a walk.

while hes a pup use " beta pup ". go to pets at home and pick up a big bag.

aslo with his bed, dont buy him a small bed, buy the biggest one you can because believe me in 6months time he'll fill it and you'd be spending a fortune on beds.

when hes older, like i said any left overs he can have or as you said biscuits and tinned food is fine.

we feed our dogs fresh meat like tripe etc but thats because we have so many and its better for building them up.

this may sound stupid but if you dont do this the dog will rule you...when you give him his dinner, as hes half way through it take the dish off him and make him wait a little while for it. its not crule its just to let the dog know that you're the dominant one

they're big powerfull dogs, enough pressure in the jaw to break an arm with 1 bite so you have make sure you're dominant otherwise he will play on it.

This I did not know. Guess it's what your taught as a kid, I was always told they were fuckers. Probably the reason why my family has a Chocolate Lab, such a soppy dog lol.

I got to agree, Tara (saxo_shortie) on here has one and it's really obedient, when he tries to bark she tells him to shh and he's quiet. They are huge dogs though and not my cup of tea.

I'm more of a Border Colley/Labrador type of person.

Good advise with the taking the food away.. I know my ex with there staffy, her mum and dad used to give him food just to stop him jumping all over the place.. which made him know if he was a little shit, he would get food... I tried to change it for them, by everytime he tried to get attention, just leaving him in the room on his own for 15 minutes..

I know a few people who have them, so i should always be able to get alot of advise here and there..

Is there any main things to really not do with them? I mean with the beach been here, iv always been told its good for dogs to get them swimming.. I surf.. so would it be a good idea when hes grown abit, to go in the water with him, so he can learn to swim?

They just look mean which is what i think puts people off alot.. I mean any dog can turn if you do the wrong things enough times.. But every rottie iv ever been around has been so obedient, and soft, they seem as though they couldnt do harm to anyone!

leave him to go in the water on his own, don't pressure him in. he will go in when hes ready.

make sure he socializes while he is young so you don't have to worry about him being around other dogs/pets when hes older.

when you take him for his injections, the vet will ask you if you want a parvo jab...my advice is to give it him. rottweilers are known for catching parvo which originally comes from cattle but it can kill them. it will only cost you about £17

simple rules really;

1.never leave him tied up outside a shop
2. no chocolate or cheese as they cant digest it
3.make sure he knows you're dominant over him
4. socialize
5. plenty of exercise
6. always make sure he has fresh water
7. use a name which isn't common for a dog
8. make sure he has his injections, you wont need to worry about booster jabs once he has had his first ones
9. plenty of time spent with him while hes a pup
10. if he does something wrong, DO NOT smack his nose, it damages their sense of smell.

i agree mate. i would trust any one of my dogs around anyone, even a young child. but if you was to jump over my back gate or whatever it would be a different story.
