metal air filter cleaning

i thought you could clean metal air filters just by rinsing them off....???

but after examining mine today (raceland enclosed intake) the thought of running water over the metal mesh filter made me think it would just rust. do i need to get special filter cleaning kit?

when i had my green cotton filter with the metal bits in it i pressure washed it and then let it dry then sprayed it with wd-40
