chargecooler vs intercooler

as above chargecooler explain how this works and is setup?

tillygti6 10th June 2011 13:28

is a charge cooler basically a water cooled intercooler? ??????

dannygti 10th June 2011 13:32

^^ yep

you have a cooler, a raidiator, a pump and fan. you pump water round the rad and through the chargecooler. simple as that really.

intercoolers are often the best solution though

Sophia_Bush 10th June 2011 13:41

yeah true danny just investigating avenues for next build

stevo1600 10th June 2011 13:42

why would an intercooler be better though danny?

bigger than a chargecooler? if waters being pumped around, that must seriously reduce intake temps more than what an intercooler could i would of thought.

not 100% sure why, but intercoolers just work better.

also, the weight of a charge cooler is another downside + more things to go wrong.
they say they are good for confined spaces.

tillygti6 10th June 2011 13:46

on the supercharged lotus's the space is a major factor for chargecooling. also some cars dont need a chargecooler if the intercooler is at the front of the car as say in the boot.

chargecooler isn't as affected by ambient temps as an intercooler. Chargecooler also can be fitted (generally) closer to the throttle body, reducing lag (less pressure drop/less piping). Also means you've the side effect of not obstructing the main radiator - leading to overall lower engine temps.

The downsides are the more complex system, plumbing, and additional points of possible failure.

Water absorbs heat 4x slower than air, so keeps the temps down longer (especially when used in a short sprint setup, drag racing etc). However, the flip side is of course it also releases it's heat 4x slower too.

Of course - one you've got a charge cooler setup, there's nothing stopping you trying to drop the water temps below ambient for those special moments - think ice cubes in the water, peltiers etc). :) Then you'll be getting serious low intake temps.

but if you have a charge cooler at the front were its getting cooled by air aswell as water would that not make the air colder or would it not make a difference

The charge cooler is a self contained unit - imagine an intercooler inside a bucket of water. A bit like that. The only thing that needs to be in the airstream is the chargecooler radiator - typically the size of an oil cooler, so doens't block the regular radiator :)

carlsmith715 10th June 2011 15:36

oh right i kind of get it now

good in winter when the water freezes

axsaxoman 11th June 2011 00:45

you would only use a charge cooler if you have no space for an intercooler
more complicated, still needs a water rad to cool the water in the charge cooler + pump to circulate the water ,and once over powered takes along time to drop the temp again .
so charge cooler is the second best choice ALWAYS if you have an option for anything other than a drag car

I had a bespoke twin core chargecooler made by pace for my old rover turbo coupe, the inlet manifold was really cold. however, the pressure drop across the twin core was pushing the turbo outside the map(overspinning to produce the required pressure), i changed to a pulsar intercooler(had end tank swapped round to fit) & i made more power with less boost & also had less lag.

wolf_gsxr 11th June 2011 08:39

If your looking for cooler temps have you considered using cryo with your intercooler. My mate had what looked like a nitrous tank in his eve but it was cryo spray for the intercooler.
