Fail Brake conversion

Whats up guys i have the gti-6 lucas callipers and pads etc along with 283mm discs which i tried fitting to my car yesterday and once everything was on the disc would not even spin as rubbed on the inside of the frame, only way to make it clear was undo the calliper bolts like 2cm's!

What have you guys done or what am i missing out?

I have already grinded the top corners for strut clearance and im not sure what to do now as i need them on badly old ones are knackered!

Car is a 02 VTR with ABS if needed Thanks in advance!!

you got the right disc's? dunno if they are same as the 206 GTi brakes but some arent deep enough and hit the carrier

Iirc there are two types of caliper that use the 283mm discs, and i think the discs were different.
For example theres the older type (Lucas caliper)
And the newer type (Bosch)
The newer type uses quite a lot thicker discs iirc, so you've probably got the wrong ones.

A quick look here seems to verify this

I take it the carrier will bolt up flush to the mounting holes when the disc isnt fitted?

I see yes thats exactly right mate and i assume the wrong discs which is annoying, i have the lucas type but they where purchased from dealer in 2011 guessing that still does not matter though as like you said they use smaller discs!

i will bookmark this and take a look later thanks mate!

Yeah the thickness is the issue, i'm not sure whether the offset was different too but i'd imagine you have the newer type discs which won't clear.
Obviously you could measure the thickness of the discs you have and compare them to the dimensions in that guide to see which ones yours are.

Yeah will do exactly that cheers for that massive help top man!

hmmm not heard of a VTR with ABS before. thought it only came standard on VTS's.
and i would also suggest disc size being incorrect. :(

karlh944 5th September 2012 18:18

Abs came as an extra iirc on the VTRs?

Don't go grinding away metal, there are brakes out there that will bolt on no problem

You have to on these and the lucas 266 brakes, only a tiny bit and it's like not making the structure/support any worse than standard

I think he ment to the centre of them which I considered lol, measured the discs earlia they are 25 - 26 mm wide :o was shocked so yeah wrong discs, not sure weather to get some hispecs brembos etc, or get more discs? Anyone got a place or link to suggest some drilled and grooved fronts to fit the lucas GTI6's?

Massive help so far really appretiate it!

Baz 6th September 2012 00:27

Do you need drilled and grooved discs? Why not just get some normal ones from euro car parts with 106OC 25% off?
