Coloured Headlights

i see all these people driving round with different coloured headlights and know you can get tinted bulbs, but would it be ileagal to put a couloured tinting film over the actual units themselves?

This is you're first ever thread on sax p?

White is the only legal colour. Do what you want its all on your back but it's £30 fine for each head light bulb that is illegal (not white).

Edit....

That's wrong info John.

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989
SCHEDULE 2 (Regulations 18 and 20)
PART I
REQUIREMENTS RELATING TO OBLIGATORY FRONT POSITION LAMPS AND TO OPTIONAL FRONT POSITION LAMPS TO THE EXTENT SPECIFIED IN PART II
7. Colour:
White or, if incorporated in a headlamp which is capable of emitting only a yellow light, yellow.

So unless you have a car that only takes sodium bulbs white is the only colour that is legal.
But lets face it yellow head lights? :homme:

They look awful, no matter what way you look at it and they scream "police, here look at me". He says hes never been pulled up but hes not going to be honest about that is he. :homme:

Guy around here with a shitty little polo had 30,000k HIDs, literally purple, he said he used to have 15000k which are verging purple from blue but preffered these..WTF?!

But yeah, The coloured lights you see are most likely HID kits (high intensity discharge) which are not meant to be retrofitted to a car, and must come as standard from the factory, if they do not then they are legally required to have washers and automatic levelling for the headlights and projector lenses.

Or, as you've said, you can get coloured bulbs but they'd need to be brighter than the standard 55k since the colour film on the bulb will have a shielding effect on the light being emitted, making it dimmer than required.

Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong anyone, i think that's about right..roughly?

I know Halfords sell the Bosch 100w bulbs with blue tinting, so i guess they'd be the same effect...but obviously for legal reasons on the packs it says 'for off road use only'

I think my bulbs emit the same as the standard bulbs 2500k iirc and are enough.

God knows why he needs 15k :S

I hate HID's and its not because i dont have them. I actually hate them. Been blinded so many times and yes even at my car height i still get it

In the MR2 i got blinded by ANY passing cars being that low...but it's not the aftermarket HID kits that bother me..it's the ones that come on new Mercs, beemers etc..they blind me in the Leon no end.
