Hamsters bargain VTR track car
So heres the 2000 reg VTR we bought for £114 off ebay that we plan to turn into a track car.
1st assessments of the car are that it needs a lambda sensor, service and a puncture repair. The diet has already started, rear seats, door cars, speakers, trim, rear wiper motor, plastics etc all removed (available if anyone needs spares) Plan is to do a track day at Cadwell in it on Feb 1st to see how it performs in standard form then we are taking our mums to Bedford around mothers day to let them have a rag in it. If it comes back in 1 piece the next step will be a Nurburgring trip, it will be my 4th in 5 years and I'm aiming to beat my 9m 09s I did in 2013 (bmw 125i). We've drawn up a shopping list for things we'd like to do to the car so if anyone has parts available send me a pm. Only thing we've bought for it so far are a shift light lol. On the list are 406 brakes decat exhaust that will meet noise regs (100db) Induction kit Upper/lower strut braces short shifter and linkages Lowered suspension, front and rear, no more than 30-40mm poly bushes 15" wheels/tyres or is it better to stick to 14's? anything else you think might be of use. I'll update with more pics once we finish the diet/stripout. |
Also, can someone let me know the best place to get some track/graphics etc for the car so it does'nt look standard. Thanks

thanks, I've got a guy who did the sign writing on my works van for £45 but thought there may be someone who did rally/track graphic kits for Citreons?

Are you keeping std dampers and torsion bars?
Will be good to see the progress on this. |
Ideally we want to change to a stiffer track based setup mate so the standard stuff will come off at some point. Not sure whats involved in lowering the rear and I hear that Bilstein suspension gets a thumbs up but we dont want to break the bank on this car as its just going to be cheap fun and we're already thinking we should have gone for a vts but couldnt refuse it at that price.
I've not been a member long enough to get in the for sale section yet so can only hunt around on ebay but if anyone has anything we could use feel free to contact me. |
Any single silencer exhaust system will pass a db test on a VTR, they arent loud.
Decat 4/2/1 mani and a supersprint/kam/saxsport would be my vote. Standard brakes are fine with decent discs and pads. Most common and most restricting fault with a VTR is a seized compensator valve causing the back end to lock up first. If it were mine, i would strip it all out, service it, fit a 4/2/1 and exhaust system. I would then fit this Kam suspension kit, http://www.kamracing.co.uk/car-tunin...saxo-35mm.html Lower the beam about 35mm then sort 4 decent tires. Be bang on! |
Its worth pointing out that with a VTR, its pretty hard to get much out of them. the engine is a fairly lost cause, the chassis is where its at.
Lower brace is a good shout too! |
Cheers Matt, we've noticed the handbrake doesnt work and I had a friend with the same problem. Is this likely to be related to the compensator or just a common problem?
I realise the 8v's are'nt going to gain much from mods, hence not throwing silling money trying to gain 3 bhp. I figured a decat system would improve throttle response and give some sort of gain, as with the fannymould. Is an adjustable FPR worthwhile? I've fitted them to N/A cars before and its made a difference to gearchanges and slow speed corner pickup. |
As said no point spending big money for little gains, What I'd recommend on it is a 4-2-1 manifold and a decent enclosed induction kit and a decent gearbox, I fitted a vts gearbox to my old 8v and it made the world of difference but if you can get a 1.4 106 xsi gearbox or 1.3 rallye box it would be even better but starts to get abit more expensive as you can get a vts box for around £50.
|
I wouldn't recommend a 1.3 rallye box on a standard rev limit vtr, it's way too low with that 6250rpm limit and you'll top out at 105mph in fifth or thereabouts. Vts box is a better bet or s2 rallye but they are more money to buy and hard to find
