Re living my youth (Part 2)

G'day all, I'm new here and ive recently bought myself a cheapy VTR for a track toy.
I usually race bikes but the budget was growing and growing so a mate and I decided to buy a couple of cheap cars for a giggle on track.
I came across a silver Mk2 on ebay that I believe belonged to a guy called ?Luke? who was on here from Kettering. It had a few issues but as I worked on the spanners it didn't worry me too much.
This is how it looked when I picked it up

I havent really got any inbetween pics but it's had some bits done so far
Suspension sorted
Stripped out interior (plus anything else thats not needed eg fogs, arch liners etc)
Lexan windows
Bucket seat and harness
Decat and exhaust
Rallye wheels
Strut braces
Quick shift and gear linkages
Manual steering conversion
And other stuff I cant think of right now lol

Well this is how it stood a couple of days before the 1st trackday

Here it is being used in anger at Bedford on the 18th.
The car ran perfect all day, it loves to rev. I did learn a couple of lessons though, my tyres were cack and the brakes were toast by the end of the day lol

Looks good, any plans to squeeze some more BHP out of it?

Thanks

Yeah some more hp will be on the cards eventually, I want to concentrate on the brakes, handling and a cage first. What I lose on the straights I plan to make up in the corners lol

Yeah I saw you out there too, we didn't have the pace of you guys!
I've gotta say for a bog stock 80k mile engine and budget mods it was an absolute hoot. Pretty sketchy in the wet but once it dried out you can really throw them around.
Roll on the 22nd when I can get back to Bedford and see if I've improved it

tires really so make a huge difference.
How did you find the brake bias? was this locking its arse up first?

Sounds like a good plan. Always the best place to start. Then throw a 16v in it and do a few more mods and go rallying in it ;)

Looks like a fun piece of kit, decent tyres will make the world of difference. What were you running?

It wasn't too bad, the inside rear locked into corners but I kinda expected that.
It probably helps that it's got cheap and nasty rear pads in it lol.
I did reset the load sensing valve so that might have worked in my favour

I was just running whatever tyres I had.
I started on my rallye steelies but they were hopeless but they are all budget tyres.
The VTR alloys have kumhos on I think and they were a bit better.
They're all surplus now coz I've gone for gti-6 calipers and 15" wheels

Bi22le 30th January 2014 22:38

Quick update, got myself some GTi 6 calipers which I've rebuilt and trial fitted. Just waiting on the discs. Also got some 15" peugeot wheels which im prepping for a nice coat of orange, gotta pull my finger out with them as im picking up some tyres tomorrow.
