16v cambelt change

When changing the belt is it necessary to slacken the 6 sprocket bolts and the turn the not locked part of the sprockets 360 degrees , then line the belt up with the marks on the sprockets and the white marks on the belt?
Bare in mind this is with the crank shaft locked via the hole and locking pins in the camshaft sprockets too
Seems a bit of extra work that may not be necessary but if so so be it?

Please see this guide picture for reference of what I'm on about if I've not explained well enough

Im sure people will say it is necessary but i've never done it when ive done one tbh. Reason being is ive not had an issue lining the marks up as they are, then set the tension, turn it over to check etc and its always still been perfect so not seen any need to.

Yes it is necessary, Peugeot/Citroen would not have bothered making those pulleys if it were not.

Its hardly any extra work is it, slacken 6 M6 bolts, then tighten them back up, just don't over do it as these pulleys can crack.

does it not just mean rotate the outer part as far as it will go clockwise

Gandi699 21st April 2014 11:57

So they have to move a full 360 degrees or does it mean they only
Shift a little bit clockwise to take up some slack? That's what I'm a little stumped on

Have you got your timing belt kit yet? When I did mine the actual timing belt kit included full instructions, could help you understand it

You not got a Haynes?

welshpug 21st April 2014 14:18

no, DO NOT spin the cam 360, you'll bend valves if you do that!

Just pin them up, slacken the small bolts and swing the outer part clockwise as far as it will go in the slots.

fit and tension the belt, tighten the 6 bolts up.

Gandi699 21st April 2014 18:11

Don't worry I didn't do that, looking at it now you can spin the cam 360 degrees anyway the locking bolts won't let it turn that far. All sorted now cheers guys
