Stripping engine

Every day I see member's put up project's i.e. stripping down a car and rebuilding the engine etc.

I'd love to have the balls to get a car, strip it down and build it again but I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

How did people first start i.e. Are they mechanic's / training to be a mechanic or did they just buy a shity cheap car and have a go at it themselves?

My knowledge is very limited compared to some, but what I know I learnt by just having a go.

For me it was pretty much learn as you go.
Getting a little banger for a runabout helped as I could take my time.

Having patience helps too as not everything will work first off and may need modifying etc.

Learn as you go and you'll never stop learning.

Haynes book is a good investment!

my advice is buy something cheap thats not your daily and have fun with it. Stripping down scrap or otherwise non working engines and parts works well too as long as you dont mind a bit of mess

MuZiZZle 14th May 2014 16:26

I might have a go at stripping my S85 down!

Ryancoyle 14th May 2014 16:26

I'd love to buy a heap, sorn it off the road and just strip it down and rebuild it to see how I get on.

I suppose you could nearly take picture's of everything you remove then use that as a guide to build everything back up again.

Gandi699 14th May 2014 16:27

spot on. Keeping track of everything you take off to refit and labeling it all is the name of the game, along with photos. Not that I stick to doing it that way mind you, although I should

You could pick up a VTR engine for peanuts, have a crack at that.

Gandi699 14th May 2014 16:31

peanuts work out more expensive!

You cant give cooking spec 8vs away!

Ryancoyle 14th May 2014 16:32

I have a Saxo VTR sitting there but I sort've need it until August as I can't get insured in my Cupra until then.

The head gasket it on it's way out and I'll not be paying to get it fixed as I was going to sell it at the end of July, no point putting moneyzzz into a car that I'd be selling on.

Would love to try it but wouldn't have a clue how to skim head etc.

PastyVTR 14th May 2014 16:32

Exactly the same as me, would love to know how to do it. Might get a cheap scrap-ish car and have a go.

Gandi699 14th May 2014 16:35

take the head to a machine shop. You could do it at home but for the money they charge its really not worth the hassle.
Invest in some tools though ie: valve spring compressor, a selection of torque wrenches, good sockets of different fitments, angle gauges etc

I had a look at the guide on here for it and it's all mumbo-jumbo to me, I suppose that's the whole point of giving it a go yourself though.

I might try it though to fuck, nothing to lose really.

When everything is broken down like this it doesn't look at bad as what I was thinking.

I'll not be, there's a big plastic cover over it all, I can put oil and water in it though!
