newly bought VTS
Hi Guys
managed to snag a VTS for £200 quid. dead battery, oil everywhere, chassis has usual saxo rot and bodywork is tatty AF. private plate on it so i thought fuck it i'll buy it for that money. reluctant to start at first as its been sitting 6 months. doesnt like to idle but has no filter etc on so im guessing thats a vacuum issue will idle high with smallest amount of throttle. she sounds nice and doesnt smoke too much, plan is new gaskets top to bottom which should address the oil and then anything else that needs doing. once it warmed up head is a bit ticky - what could this be? do tappets need adjusting on these? just after a general 'things to check' as this is my first valver :) |
ICV can cause idle problems, worth investigation there.
In regards to tapping could be noisy injectors or the hydraulic lifters in the head to open the valves. They cant be adjusted manually unlike the 8v engines with their tappets so give it an oil change see if its clears as they could be drained after sitting so long unless they are totally gummed up and would require the cams out to remove them and a clean up of them (strip each one down to clean its bucket and piston out) or renew the lot. A decent oil change and perhaps a lifter additive may be of benefit but the latter is a bit of a grey area whether they are just snaked oil or not, all the ones i've used didnt do anything as its just an oil thinner in a bottle really. |

That's fine just didn't want to take it all apart if i didn't have to. ICV always a problem on these, had trouble a few times on the vtr, you'd turn it on and it'd rev its nuts off, without touching it! it's done 95k, the guy i bought it off bought it as a project but just left it on the drive. the owner before that was female, its had fair amount of cosmetic work done but the engine and mechanicals have clearly been neglected. i think the best course of action would be to just clean it all up like you say - i can get a good look inside and see exactly what's what. Better to take my time and investigate rather than just throw money at additives etc. I'm not really in any rush to get it on the road, my deadline will be like april next year hopefully get it out for the summer. Decent amount of time to strip it down and build it back up. new gaskets, give the head a good clean to get everything back in tolerance, and it should be a nice little bargain! Came with a lovely plate, got the certificate and everything - CS02 VTS and the car was originally an 02 plate! The shell is cleaner than my vtr, solid strut towers, but its a bit rotten underneath. no actual rust holes as on the vtr though, so should be ok with a good wire scrub and some rust proofing.
