FIX FOR !!clunking from front suspension

ok here we go i have see a few treads about this.
people complaning about a clunk when turning or on full lock
this is caused by the suspension spring cup coming looses these are originally pressed on which you hay have noticed is the reason im doing this tread as they come loose and need welding
ok not first of all you will need to check for a silver ring around the suspension strut
follow the pictures
located here

and here is it a bit closer

ok next 1 is where the cup is

ok people this is where we get technical (lol)
this is where you will see a silver ring where the cup has moved about causing the knock/clunk and where they need welding

ok now how too

first of all you need the car on axle stand or ramp either will do

remove the wheel
remove the caliper and disc
remove the bottom ball joint nut and bolt and pull out the ball joint
remove the anti roll bar nut (some dont have them)
remove the track rod end nut (from the strut)
and remove the drive shaft nut
undo the 3 13mm from the top mount

now you will have to use some spring compressors and remove the top mount nut remove the mount and spring
now you will HAVE TO REMOVE THE DAMPER because if you get it welded with out removing the damper you could face a nice explosion a guy at work found out the hard way
to get the damper out remove the big gold nut and it will slide out

ok when refitting after its been welded here

put a little engine oil in the strut where the damper goes bit of grease round the thread of the big gold nut holding the damper in and refitt every thing double check its all tight and there you go all done and no knock/clunk

if you having difficualty pm me and im happy to help

if this tread help drop me a rep :)

cheers steve

I'd very much hate to piss on your bonfire mate but I thought this was it...

Knocking front suspension?

steveos_vts 27th October 2006 23:26

no not at all. its completly different noise this noise is when turning and its more metalic
and the other 1 is more of a constant knocking noise

mate im a trained citroen mechanic and have been for the last 5years and done about a million of these common problem on more mk 1 saxo's rather than mk 2 but stiil have the same problem

well any way check both if you have this problem' cant say fairer than that lol

Mitchell 29th October 2006 11:29

thanks for this, helps alot. I shall print it out and slap it on my mechanics forehead to make sure it gets done... been pishin me off all year.

you should do more of these tbh.

Steveo,

This is quality. Have had a knocking for a couple of months now, and no garage could work it out. Welded the strut up at the weekend, and its cured.

tbo i would its easy to see if you have a large silver ring around the strut bud

and yes it is probally the reason why it clunking

Just had a look at my gf's VTR and i think i see a silver ring, i took some pics but they arn't so good.

I know the pics aint the best but does this look like the same problem ?

Cheers

VTSKris 17th December 2006 15:59

Oh and the clunk sound has gone to more of a grinding noise over time. Is this just cause the spring is moving more and easier now or is this a different problem?

Cheers

dont fancy doing mine do you?

youre only a few miles down the m4 from me and i am sure i have this problem.

my local mechanics are a waist of space and say they can never find anything

steveos_vts 18th December 2006 17:25

jazzyc look down

steveos_vts 18th December 2006 17:27

VTSKris looking at the pictures yea looks like you may have this problem but PEOPLE please remember the the strut has a rubber shield that also rubs the paint away ok kris to confirm this

get a leaver bar under the spring cup and gently leaver the cup up does it move??
