Saxperience - Citroen Saxo Forum - Power steering refurb guide

Erm, firstly hello all, been a while since I posted here ;)

Secondly, Im following this guide to refurb my PS Pump because its been sticking and whirring.

1. You need to dis-connect the electrics firstly, and then the pipes/hoses – you will
need a catch tray for the oil. The next step is to unbolt the pump bracket from the
chassis, the pump should now be free to remove from the car. Place the bracket in
the vice, with the electric motor being at the top, (with the electric wires at the
top). You will see the end cap (where motor is), there are 8 rivet type fixings, you
can either file them off or gently knock them back – away from the middle of the
motor, this will free the end cap that carries the bearing. You will now gently be
able to remove the cap and bearing from the shaft, this will leave the brush
mounting and wires. These also need to be removed carefully out of the body of
the motor. You now need to check to see if you have a seized brush – by pushing
gently the back of the brush against the spring, if one of can’t be moved then it is
seized – free them off carefully. If you find that one of the 4 brushes is broken, go
to an auto electricians or alternator/starter motor repair specialist, purchasing a
brush, as long as it is bigger than the one you need you can shape this down with
a file to the correct shape and size of the original brushes. Remove the old one
and cut the wire, re-solder the new brush into position. Then replace the bursh
mounting onto the commentator, then put a small amount of grease onto the
shaft/bearing and re-fit the end cap with a thin amount of silicon sealant around
the edge of the cap, and knock the rivet type fixings back into the end cap, and refit
back to the car, bleed up the pump following the Haynes manual.

That's where I am, Ive removed the cap off the rivets, and the 4 pin type things facing the center with the wires on. Sorry no technical terms, Im confused as to what is what now lol.

So now I see a solid cylindrical tube about 1 inch going down, and 1 inch wide. This is on a big cylinder of copper wire, with loads of pads around it. Is this what Im meant to remove?

When I turn It, it's rough, and is definitely what the problem Is I think. Loads of built up black shit and and Its all dry - Is this right?

Quick help would be appreciated seeing as my car Is in pieces on the drive way :clapping:

If It helps, the problem was a very loud whirring noise, along side weak, or no PAS at the same time. Its Intermittent, and can go off on Its own, or If I stopped and moved the steering wheel around and round to loosen It up.
