Well the bloke i spoke to (Wasnt John although ive been told to call back and talk to him as hes much more helpful) wasnt particularly helpful, he was talking as in disbelief and having a bit of a chuckle :s
I basically said to begin with that i wanted some advice with my VTS engine that ive cleaned up and want to rebuild a bit.
Told him the headwork thats been done and was wondering what he thought about Forges pistons for the bottom end based on the engines milage..
Thats a perfesctly normal well described question i thought.
His response:
Well to begin with how was the engine running when you got it?
Me: Fine so i was told and i have some service history from some diagnostics checks and it was fully checked over.
Him: So you didnt actually see or hear it running?
Me: Well no, but from all the info and documents i have it seems fine, there was a problem with the head but that was sorted by a specialist initially and QEP have completely gone over it for me.
Him: so you dont know if it was smoking or anything like that then?
Me: No but id assume not from notes on service history
Him: well its impossible for me to give a proper answer, personally id have put it in the car if you didnt know if it was running fully right first ans seeing how it went.
Me: but i thought it would be easier to change all the parts while its out the car, saves me alot of money surely? So do you think id need to change the pistons or anything given its current milage?
Him: i cant really give much more of an answer tbh, you could just change the piston rings but if you put it back together and its smoking or burning oil then you've still got to take it back apart and change them and you'll have wasted £100 on the rings
(Me then thinking so is he actually trying to say bugger it and change them anyway?)
It didnt really go much further than that, still feeling largely confused about it.
.................................................. ...................................
Any thoughts and suggestions now?
I got the feeling that he thought i was just chucking the engine into a 1.0 car without thinking about it. I hadnt explained that id gone to great lengts upgrading the suspension, brakes and everything else about the car and dont want to chuck in a grubby old engine.
This car has afterall been a project that ive learnt alot from and i want to benefit from getting some engine knowledge and finishing things properly with thew intention of running the car for a long time with maximum effort gone into it all- not some little tart whacking an engine in a 1.0 shell for the crack and to rag it around
