lower intensity exercise = mostly fat used for energy

higher intensity exercise = mostly carbs used for energy

or the other way of doing it is -

do a marathon as fast as you can from the start to the end - the body will use up all its carbs then have to use fat, it will use all that up then breakdown your muscles to use protein for energy.

usually a bad idea though
