I give an example, I got a peugeot 106 cap off ebay to replace the horrible metal one that came with my car. It came with a key in it, If you hold the back of the lock and turn the key to the locked position the key will pull out. The cap is then left in a locked state until you put the key back in and turn it again.

There are two raised sections on the lock, sort of like tabs, that when aligned allow the cap to enter the filler neck.

When locked these raised sections are rotated 90 degrees to secure the cap to the filler neck.

If you are looking at the lock from the back:

=o= is unlocked

=o= is the locked position

So we doing the same thing really, you use a knife, i use hand.
