It works like this mate:

Sealed boxes are more suited to sound quality listeners. They are punchy and will play all freqeuncies fairly flat but they dont excell when it comes to loudness.

Ported boxes are often bigger than sealed and are tuned to a certain frequency, which is where the sub will peak. I.e. 30hz. This doesnt mean it wont play above or below it's tuning, but it wont play as loud as at 30hz. Ported boxes can be upto 3db louder (at it's tuned frequency) than a sealed box.

As a rule of thumb, larger boxes (ported or sealed) give more low end extension, but hinder the sub's power handling capabilities and also its ability to punch.

Smaller boxes are more peaky (i.e. hit some notes very hard, but not others) and they are punchy.
