The Story

I first saw this vtr advertised for sale on the PistonHeads website at the beginning of December 2010 where she was advertised with incredibly low milage at just 43,000, meaning on average a year she only covered around 4,700 miles!

At the time I was only just browsing the internet for a rough guide price of a good condition mk2 vtr but decided to bookmark the page and take down the sellers contact number just incase I managed to get the money together sooner than expected.

When it finally come around to purchasing a new car later on in the month I found that the PistonHeads advert had expired but I decided to get in touch with the owner anyway to see if it was still available. To my shock it was and he had now dropped the price to £1,200 so I carried out a HPI check with 'mycarcheck.com' which shown the milage of the car to be legitimate but to be previously recorded as a category c write off back in March 2008, I was not too worried about this if it had been repaired properly due to the price and in the end I managed to knock him down an extra £100 because of the long distance I had to travel (508 mile round trip). He was also nice enough to give me £20 back from the money I gave him for food on the way home!

The car drove on the button all the way back with the 254 mile drive costing me half a tank of Shell V Power.

The Initial Bad Points & Problems

After getting home and parking in decent lighting I realized that the drivers side door was previously red and had been re-sprayed mauritius blue to match the car. I only realized this because of where small areas of paint had peeled away, mainly visible behind the door handle and most probably due to previous damage caused when declared as a category c. The wing mirror base is also not attached properly as it moves when trying to fold the mirror. No problems with this when driving so not an essential fix at the minute.

I do intend on replacing/re-spraying the door and getting 106 mirrors at a later date.

Again on the drivers side the wing is slightly out of place due to snapped clips, it has been fixed previously using Tiger Seal or similar. Unsure whether to replace the clips or do a better job than previous with some adhesive. I’ll let a body shop decide what is best when I go and have the mirrors and door replaced.

The little piece of trim underneath the O/S headlight flares out on the one side. It is not that noticeable but will be getting sorted because I now know it is there.

I also will need to get the car professionally valeted as the car has been through automated car washes a few too many times and has very light surface scratches in the paintwork.
