Every day I see member's put up project's i.e. stripping down a car and rebuilding the engine etc.

I'd love to have the balls to get a car, strip it down and build it again but I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

How did people first start i.e. Are they mechanic's / training to be a mechanic or did they just buy a shity cheap car and have a go at it themselves?
