ive got a 1200wrms amp & sub set up which cost me £180
, its all about where you look. and your wrong, as alex said in my quote below if set up properly the speakers will be fine, coonper ran a shitty set of 6x9s rated at 90wrms with 600wrms and they didnt blow! oh and in your statement of budgets, you forgot to include a box and wires

the general rule is: bigger sub, more bass, smaller sub, tighter bass.. this isnt allways the case though, as a 500wrms 8" sub will produce more bass than a 12" 50wrms sub.. however, theres no "replacement for displacement".. this is similar in terms of quality, allthough a smaller sub will have better quality than its bigger counterpart (providing same brand, same model just bigger size) this isnt allways true as a £500 12" will sound tigther than a £5 8", quality of parts used, and brands plays a huge part, you get what you pay for.

few points:
1, youll need a box, i didnt reccomend a prefab box as theyre awful, ideally you should leave this stuff boxed up in your room while you save for a custopm built box, remember a box is more important than the sub
2, yes it is much more than the 400wrms you wanted, allthough i dont understand why you want a set rms wattage, and also, if its too bassy, you can turn the gain down (this will reduce the bass output, and wont damage your sub before any noob says it)
