Its not quite as easy as a polish will get rid of scratches and stonechips etc . The rule is that if a chip or scratch can be felt with your finger nail , it wont polish out .
To get rid of chips and heavier scratches , I will get a touch up pen and fill the scratch . Then wetsand with 1500grit and then 2000 grit and maybe 2500, then buff the section back , getting rid of stone chip .
A polish such as Auto Glym SRP will 'fill' some of the lighter scratches and swirls but dont expect it to fill every scratch .

Well give your car a good clean (2 bucket method ) with a good shampoo or snow foam .
Then you will need to clay the car ( Meguairs clay kit is a good start)
Then use , as you have it AG SRP , and then apply a decent quality wax .This is what makes the paint look good .
If you can machine polish or get someone to do it , this will make the paint look even better mate .

you could always look into getting a detailer to do all the heavy work for you to get it back to a brilliant standard which could can then maintain through washing/claying/polishing/waxing etc.
