Default Shannon's 106 GTI Track Day/Weekend Toy Project! PICTURE HEAVY!

Hey Guys.

Thread for the new project. This has been copied from 106owners. But will try and keep updated here too for those who are interested...

Been on here a while now and never posted a progress thread, some of you may know me more from Sax-p where I've posted all my other build threads of VTR's/VTS' and Rallye's etc. However, been told by a few people now to get a build thread up of my current 106 GTI.

This build is simply as cheap as possible and when I have free time, due to having my first child. So it's to a budget and the plan is to see some track days at Castle Combe hopefully.

So I bought quite locally to me a 2002 China Blue 106 GTi at the start of this year. Was up for £1000 with the following:

120k
MOT till May 2016
Dent in the boot
Lowered by the looks of things
2" pugsport (not mentioned in ad)
4 branch manifold (not mentioned in ad)
2 bald rear tyres
Drivers window drops (Regulator?)
Body work a little rough
Air Bag half leathers
Shell mint with no rot
Rebuilt rear beam by current owner.

Pictures that were on the advert. I had to ask for an engine bay picture.

I wasn't overly happy with paying £1000 for this and being a project wanted a bit cheaper than this. Had a bit of communication with the guy selling and half agreed £600. So the following weekend I go to get it.

I got there and to say the least the rear beam didn't look so rebuilt considering it had slight camber to it. It also had VERY bald rear tyres. Body work was what I'd expect for a £600 car. Not overly bothered by bodywork anyway considering it's use. I had plans of re-shelling the car anyway if I have it a while. The leathers wasn't in the best condition, obviously I'd be putting buckets and harnesses and a cage in at some point anyway but was hoping to get a bit of money back on the seats. Upon the test drive it pulled very well through all the gears and clutch felt good (owner had failed to put on advert he replaced the clutch not long ago, bonus) and the gearbox had no crunch's or whines etc. The rear beam did not feel rebuilt what so ever. Got back to his house, one final check over to check usual things and make sure I was happy. Whilst checking for rust on the shell I was told I wouldn't find any as it was mint and that's what he checked for when buying. However, found a soft spot on drivers side boot, pushed hard an made about a 5p hole, apart from that was really clean and solid. When on the test drive the owner told me the reason for sale was because his MK2 Jetta had a lot of work for MOT etc and needed the money for the bill and would rather the Jetta over the 106. We then came to an agreed price of £475 for the 106.

So I drove home and left it outside my house for a few days till I had chance to get it over my dad's unit. Upon the day of getting it there I discovered water in the rear, sunroof leak. Not a problem as I was planning to pull this out anyway.

Work commenced straight away with stripping the car's interior completely. Seats, carpet, headlining, boot plastics, dash etc all out. Then got rid of ALL of the sound deadening in the interior. (that stuff weighs a lot and is a must if trying to save weight)

Out came the sunroof mech:

Oh I bought these too:

2x Sparco Sprint Bucket Seats, 2x 6 Point TRS Harnesses, 2x OMP seat mounts!

OMP Corsica Steering Wheel

Anyway's all of this came out and was sold as a goblet for £50, cheap but wanted it all collected at once. Saved a hell of weight too!

Then it comes to this part. Me and the friend who has been helping me, had a mad idea. Lets tackle the loom and minimise it as much as possible...

This is how the car was left for a few weeks due to falling out with my Dad and collecting the car and putting it behind a friends garage, this then meant work could only commence on dry and weekends in the day. But first it needed to be water tight as covering it all the time would be a pain. So a sheet of alloy was bought, cut, rattle canned and rivet/tiger sealed on:

I had then fitted some manual regulators i'd bought a while ago as I thought the drivers side had failed (turns out it was just the clip that goes up the side pf the door had come off) I wanted manual anyway as was stripping the door looms.

I had also bought some race style door cards and pulls (and a radio blank but sizing was wrong so waiting on another)

Once water tight work could commence on the interior loom.

I had bought some bits to help us tidy it up a bit:

Sliding zip tie clips, along with insulation tape and fabric loom tape.

Dash was also in but got very dark at this point. We have removed the looms for - Alarm, Central locking, radio, speakers, interior lighting, rear wiper motor etc. safe to say there's a lot of weight in all the cables removed! But very boring job.

So second fan went on (still need to wire to a switch on dash)
Aero catches went on
Ecosse Induction went on (still to buy a filter, whats best?)
Sprayed the badge black
Drilled some holes in the front bumper because race car and removed the brace from behind it.
Suspension to be fitted when I get some hub flanges.

Got a B&M Quick shift in the car (in the pictures somewhere)
A GE Short shit on the new adjustable gear linkages (sorry no pics)
A S2 8v Rallye coil pack and uprated lead (again no pics)
JP4 covers, we all know what these look like (missing the coil pack cover, anyone want to sell me one cheap?)
Power flex exhaust rubbers
266mm callipers (need braided hoses)
There is a steering wheel boss there too
De wiper bung fitted!

I Bought these:

Along with a second fan. Also a Ecosse induction from Mat Veal but no pictures of these till fitted:

Bought these for the drivers seat as the OMP bases sit too far back and I'm a short ass.

So last night I spent a couple more hours on the car. Got the dash fully in. Awaiting the radio blank. Then I can mount the steering wheel etc. Passenger seat is in also, sadly no pictures of this. And got the powerflex exhaust hangers on the back box. Think there's one missing at the front possibly?

So, a few things happened today!

Bucket seats and harnesses are now in!

And I bought the car some new shoes Tram Dynamic Pro Race 1.2 done less than 200 miles, with Yokohama AD048 tyres to match hope you all like!

That's all for now. Oh and before I have the harness police on my case, a cage is next on the cards!

That is pretty much where I am at the moment! This all happened in that past. So it's bit all over the place as are the pictures!

Granted some things could be better spec'd satchshift, coilovers etc. However it's on a budget and want the car running and drive-able and slowly upgrade things when I can.

All comments welcome. Suggestions too!

I'll try and keep this up to date as possible!

Thanks, Shannon.

Sounds like mine tbh.

It blows on the join between the cat/decat and the center section.

Progress!

So done a few things on the car lately!

Fitted the rallye coilpack and red Ht leads, along with a K&N filter I had laying about as the Ecosse was cracking Got the second fan wired in on a switch too

Also, got the spigot rings on for the TD Pro Race 1.2. Whilst doing so the "rebuilt" beam isn't so rebuilt hahah!

The passengers side wheel had maaaaaad camberz anyway so been thinking of getting a replacement. Anyone know if a fucked axle is worth anything?

Other news, might be buying a job lot of parts including a new axle with gaz shocks and a complete 16v conversion, because PH3 cams and Cat cams springs with RR print out of 138bhp (IIRC) so will swap the engines and axle and sell the conversion back on!

Also, help needed... When I bought the GTI there was never a hanbrake switch. Meaning that the hand brake light was on all the time. So went to the scrappy to get a new switch (well a couple spares in case) but plugged in the switches and the light didn't go out! Put a multi meter across the wires and no readings Does anyone know what pin it is on Digi dials so I can re wire it?

Cheers!

All comments welcome!

So, the lovely weekend consisted of me buying that job lot of parts!

So plans are to now, remove my current engine and box, fit my box to the new engine and get it back in. Also swap the axles over and fit new sturts and 266mm calipers, just need braided lines.

Anyone know anywhere in the SW where renting an engine crane is cheap ish?
