Definitive guide to VTR alternator set-up conversion.

Thought I would post up a detailed guide on everything you need for the Saxo VTR alternator conversion as I didn't found any with the aim to solve,hopefully,any doubt and to avoid purchasing wrong parts.




Correct Top and Bottom Brackets Diagram:




Bottom Pulley

You can re-use the standard VTS pulley,it does not need to be replaced with the VTR one,I had to change mine as it had play so I just went with the aluminum one.



Top Alternator Bracket

This one is both fitted to the VTR and lower spec models like the 1.1 petrol,the only difference between these is that the 1.1 and other models,VTR excluded,have a hole in the upper portion of the bracket so that an heat shield can be fitted as seen in the above diagram.

This comes complete with the tensioner for the alternator belt.

Bottom Alternator Bracket

This is unique to the Saxo VTR and what you'll need.








Alternator

Same as the bottom pulley,you can re-use the standard VTS alternator.


Alternator Belt

You'll need a 5 PK 710 belt,this is fitted to many vehicles but all you need is the part number so you can go to any car dealer and order one,just for clarity it will be a 5 ribs belt with a total length of 710mm.


Will I need to make new holes in the block?

No the holes are all there for both the top and bottom bracket,the only thing you'll need to do is to make a few new threads for the bottom bracket,you'll need a standard M8 x 1.25 pitch tap and die set.

you need a plug tap to clear the rust out, taper tap wont clear deep enough for the bolts to clamp the bracket.

its the same as a vts, but the brackets dispense with the expensive tensioner pulley.

Also where did you get the new brackets etc from? I need a couple for a jp4 swap to a 106 gti

I bought them from eBay,there should still be some left for sale.

Thanks,with the VTR alternator setup there is more clearance from the manifold and it gets less heat so you avoid frying any cables,useful when you have an unwrapped aftermarket manifold,the tensioning of the belt is quicker and easier and there is no risk of snapping the bolt from the VTS tensioner and yes as said it's a cheaper alternative.

Hi mates.I've fitted the two VTR brackets on a nft 100hp engine but a 97a amp is too big so both pulleys are not un line.Do u know witch is the correct amp for these kind of brackets?
80a maybe?
Could i fit any 90a amp?
Mine is a 106 rallye mk1 for rallying so i dont want an extra pulley for tensioning.The vtr system is better but not sure about the correct amp.

Just dont want yo waste more money on wrong items.

I suspect it is not the alternator that is the problem if it fits in the brackets ,but the pulley on it is the wrong offset -change pulley
or indeed the bottom crank pulley could be changed for a later tin one from a 206
