Head gasket
Hello guys I’m hoping someone can help, I have a 1.4 desire with sludge in the coolant so suspecting head gasket! I’ve brought a new head gasket kit and (long shot) is there anyone near Bournemouth who could give me a hand changing it as I’m not confident to do it myself!

How did you come across this? just by chance looking into the radiator cap or is the car overheating?
Head gasket failures aren't that common.
Any pics? Is your oil level dropping?

its pretty common, the gasket rots out around the oil feed to the head and eventually leaks into the coolant passageways.
its one of the easiest engines ever to do a HG on, get yourself a haynes manual, a HG kit, bolts and a timng belt kit with water pump and crack on.

I have thought about it but I’m pretty sure the head will need skimming so would prefer someone who 100% knows what they are doing to help

done a couple and they haven't needed skimming to be honest, they use a fibre gasket so are quite forgiving.

Ah ok, just brought it and I suspect the last owner has been driving round with the gasket blowing for sometime going on the amount of sludge in the cooling system, do the head bolts need to be tightened in a certain sequence?
