Default Strange noises coming from engine

I’m hoping someone can help me, i was driving my 1.4 Saxo to the local shops and when sat in traffic I could hear a series of small pop/bang like noises coming from the engine. It sounded like some time of small explosions (sounds drastic) then shortly after the car overheated.

Does anyone have any idea what these noises could be?

Doesn't sound good. If it overheads again, turn the cabin heater and fan to full, will draw some heat from the engine.

Has the fan for the radiator failed which caused the car to overheat? Will the car run and is it fine or bad? If it's bad then switch it straight back off again.

I’ve never got heat from the heaters the radiator thermo and temp sensor were all replaced last year by previous owner, it’s still running bad and overheating so haven’t turned it back on since!

Any smoke from the exhaust? If you've never got heat it sounds like your heater core is blocked which could suggest other cooling issues. See how the car is once it had cooled down again. If the fan didn't kick in then there's a problem somewhere there. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will see the post tonight!

Was the cooling system bled when the radiator etc was changed?

To bleed the cooling system there are 3 bleeder valves to open. A Youtube video displays their locations.
