nope.

Just use a screw driver and wedge it between the grooves.

Or use pliers/mole grips...

No need for special tools.
Turn it clockwise iirc.

its piss easy once you have done one you can suss it.
Worth getting a haynes manual for the spaxo if you dont have one, just to look at diagrams.

As i find some of the guides the long way to do stuff, espeically their guide to changing a driveshaft.

Depends what pads you're using and the context I would have thought. This for heavy track use?

Just for info - i just had the exact same problem as kingmerf.

The calliper was siezed so there was no room for movement to allow enough space each side of the disc to fit the pads - very frustrating!!!
I tried smacking it with a hammer, This didnt work - it seemed to be properly seized. I even used a couple of clamps to try and compress it but that didnt work either.

I ended up loosening both bolts that hold the calliper to the trailng arm and that seemed to loosen up the calliper so it would move freely again.

I was then able to adjust the position of the calliper so there was plenty of room either side of the disc to fit the pads

Maybe be worth mentioning this in the guide incase anyone else has similar problems

As you said....piece of pi$$ !!! Job done with no probs !! Thanks for your help !!

The next big issue is the rear beam....the drivers side rear wheel is sitting at a strange angle....it never rains but it pours !! That'll be my next job !!

Interesting and useful post.

I referenced the Haynes manual and found something interesting..

Take off wheel,

remove the pin in the slider bar

knock out slider

pads fall out (nothing new here)

---
undo torqx screw on disc-

without pads in, you can remove and replace the disc
-so no need to remove the caliper.
so remove disc,

wind in piston (as mentioned) making sure the 'slot' is horizontal so the 'lug' can get in on the inside pad

put in new disc

put pads in

away you go (well, follow the other guides here like put wheel back on, more grip than the disc).

i done this the other day and it wasnt like you've described... i also used some copper grease... also dont you have to take a little bit of brake fluid out and then get somthing like a hand help vice grip (i dont know their name) and squeeze the part that pushes the thing that pushes the pads together whilst you are actually braking back, to actually fit the new discs and pads in? maybe thats why people are confuzed?

It is mentioned about the pushing the piston back (i think thats what you mean) thats the bit about winding the piston clockwise which retracts it so you have space to get the pads in.
