Default metal blocks in doors

My VTS has got a metal block pop riveted to the inner door skin on both sides , what is this for ? I can only think its an unusual form of side impact protection or something to give the doors a bit of heft when closing them .

The handles and plastics give the door its weight.

where is this block? I don't remember seeing them on my VTS.

Mine is a 2000 VTS , if you remove the door card and look down inside the door you can see the blocks . They feel like metal but i have not removed one to have a good look at it yet .
