I'd go what Maxwell has said, and I said that from the start. Go for a 1.8, preferably a VAG engine, tuning potenital is much higher for a start and will be less expensive in the long run. Plus these engines are pretty bullet proof and right up there with the Japs .

Like I said. If you have an intended use then build the car for it and maximise its potential for its intended purpose. I would bet its easy to swap a B16 to a B18 if he required at a later date. He doesnt want the fastest car on the planet. You dont pick a 1.6 for that but he does want the fastest 1.6.
It does not always cost a lot to fit a different engine. My racecar has two top mounts so I can either fit the 1.9 Mi16 or the 1.8 XU7JP engine. Probably cost me less than £100 more.

Exactky kam.
I'm sort of deviating from my original plan, which is unlike me, so back to square one. B16b hunt continues.....

The trick is to choose an engine to be competitive. I could try to enter my car in class A. I could build a 300+bhp 2.4 engine but I would have to race against super touring cars and other supercars like the noble. The people in the top classes are more likely to have lots of experience, and more likely to have a bigger budget than me.
By making mine under 1750cc I can race against production spec M3's and vectra challenge cars. A far easier class to get some trophies in.
If all you want to do is go fast - fit a bigger engine. If you want to win then give yourself the best opportunity to do so. Its not just about you when racing.
Kev

Was interested in this thread and subscribed to it as was planning on doing the vtec conversion myself.
Am now really, really interested in this thread!!!!!
Will be very interested to know the weights of these engines and boxes if you get the chance, inpartcular the total weight of the old saxo 16v lump with gearbox inlet and exhaust etc, and then the same for the 1.8T as I will be using mine on track days not just in a straight line.

hahaha see my opinions do count
get cracking mate! 300bhp+ ftw!!!
i would say using polo gti shafts etc, you could get the tracking spot on and then do a lot of relocation - power steering pump and battery etc
will be the most epic car on here!
if i had of still been working in france, my blue vts was to get the same treatment, as the front chassis legs where not up to much and also seeing the space framed saxo on ssc, i had an idea of vag 1.8 20vt - was getting engine, box and loom for £650

Sorry guys, the 20vT is stopping in the new car and I'm sticking with my original plan of fitting a B16b into the saxo so I can run in Gp A for a while.
I reckon 200bhp will be more than enough for my sedate driving style and it means it should handle a damn sight better than with a big heavy lump up front.
Think I've sourced a new engine so I should have a proper update pretty soon!

On a positive note, however there are no plans to keep the Octavia standard so any tips you can fire my way would be massively appreciated!

get the engine and box out of it and stick it into your saxo
and then buy a 2.2 20vt aby 5 cylinder audi s2 engine and get it into the skoda, then twin turbo it and it should see 800bhp +
