Default Loud screeching

Hi all, sorry I'm a complete noob when it comes to cars, only been driving for a few months. Anyhow, I've got a 1.1 saxo, r reg nothing fantastic, sometimes when its either wet or cold theres a lour screeching coming from the engine bay - it does disapear, sometimes its loud, other times is fairly low.

One of my mates said it sounds like the fan belt, but I thought it had teeth so wouldn't slip.

anyhow - any ideas to what it'll be and how much it would cost to sort out.

It also feels a little like I loose power when I can hear the noise, or is this me being overly sensitive?

Ok slight update on the issue - I foolishly had a rubber mat in between my steering column and the dials, I put my bluetooth GPS receiver there, and sometimes my wallet and the mat stops it slipping about. Unfortunately this block the sight of the red battery light being on while the engine was on.

Last night, I was unable to leave my friends as the battery wash completely dead. today, my dad came round and we took a look (I work shifts, inlcuding nights / weekends) so it's the first chance I've had to take a look.

The alternator belt was jammed off the wheel, so it doesn't look like the battery had been charge for a while.

So, now I've learnt a few things: removing batteries, jump starting and adjusting the tension on the alternator. I think most importantly is to be able to see all the lights on the dash!!!

It may only be small, but when it comes to cars I'm thick as anything....

thanks guys - my batteries currently charging, but in a few hours I'll be fully mobile again!

That would have been my first guess, get it changed and it should go away.
