im trying to make my choice now but i still can't lol the difference is splash out £30 extra and get the Intel Core Duo or get the Athlon 5600. I will try and stabily overclock either to 3.0ghz ....

Ive always gone with AMD in past due to price but now i have the option im worried about making the wrong choice. Im only upgrading because i have some1 buying my cpu / mobo and ram now and i only have to put an extra £50 towards getting new parts...

thanks for all your responses people.

I have gone for the AMD AM2 5600+ with an asus motherboard as it was £40 cheaper and you can overclock it to the 6000+ (but with 800ghz support unlike the 6000 chip)Also i have the option for SLI with this board

Should be good, il let you know how they are for anyone having the same sort of question.

Well its up and running, nothing is taxing it at the moment its overclocked to 3.12ghz using the BIOS overclocking tools on the Asus delux motherboard and running at 47degress. Not too bad atall, im going to get a new heatsink soon and SATA drives to add to the spec.

Vista isn't liking the RAM much , 74% used... im only on media player, sax-p and msn ...

Might go back to xp i dunno

omg only just found this thread, i'm usually on hexus.net forums for this kinda stuff.
darylVTR glad u made a decision in the end.
won't talk about AMD vs Intel now coz that's been done.

get CPUZ and you should know what you're doing, from the sounds of things, to be able to tell us your RAM timings etc.

With AMD it is important to have low timings because your CPU has onboard memory controllers, so needs quick responses from RAM for high performance, esp against Core2Duo!

try memory-configurator.com that's where i got my TEAM Elite RAM from, won't find better site for RAM in europe! that link is direct to Dual channel 2GB sets, which is what you want since Vista is RAM hungry.

May i suggest this G.skill RAM low latency, high frequency, lifetime warranty, good looking heat-spreaders, what more do you want?!

P.S i don't work for g.skill, honest

once you've got the right RAM you'll be ready for some massive overclocking.
