The office I manage the I.T Infrastructure for are behind on technology and as such as using SBS2003 and Windows XP Pro for operating systems (due to costs).

Now SBS2003 will still be supported for a while but I am concerned now about the fact that they are withdrawing support for XP early next year therefore no security patches etc.

I am looking at going to Windows 7 but am unsure that I am going about it the right way.

Am I just looking at purchasing the Windows 7 Pro Upgrade Edition x Computer within the office (around 30 computers)?

I know I will have to perform clean installs on them all as there is no easy upgrade but this is the first time I am experiencing this.

Will the PC's be able to cope with W7? I mean, you did say they're a bit behind on technology.

They are AMD 64's 2.4GHz with 1gb RAM so not too bad tbh and should be fine, I'm running a test machine tomorrow to see that all works ok.

Not looking forward to porting from SBS2003 to SBS2008 when the time arises.

I have an AMD x64 3.2ghz processor, its old but isn't slow by any stretch, i would certainly worry about 1gb of ram though, I'd say a minimum of 2 for windows 7 and you should be running sweet.

System requirements on their site say 1GB but tbh I will tell if that is adequate tomorrow when I do a test run. Can't do it on my computer as it has 2GB and wouldn't be an accurate reflection.

I'd be adding a bit of RAM if i were you since it'll be 64 bit versions you will be installing It seems to be a bit more greedy.


I'm running 64bit W7 on a 3.1Ghz Pentium 4 with 2GB or DDR2 and it runs great. combined with an ATI 5xxx series graphics card I'm no problem for basic gaming (minecraft yay), 3D cad rendering and of course the all important 1080 online video

When I had 1Gb I really struggled though.

It won't be running 64bit OS as it is overkill for what is done in the office tbh.

Am I right in saying though that the process is just to buy 25 x Win 7 Pro Upgrade and install?

W7 will struggle on 1GB on RAM I'd say..

We run 3GB on our's and they still aren't brilliant with CAD running on W7.

Mate you need to upgrade that ram. Win7 with moderate program's open will max that easy
