Cool Making a custom instrument cluster

Hi, I am taking a mecatronic technician course and as a final project I was thinking of making a 80's and 90's inspired custom instrument cluster for my 1.1 Saxo, but I don't know if it would be possible without changing the ECU and how does the car gets its info.
As far as I know it comes from sensors spread around the car and all of them go to the ECU where certain pins give certain information.
So with this out of the way Im looking for manuals where I could learn about this or if anyone could explain how it works.

Haynes manual is best bet. Has a wiring diagram in it.

I remember changing the dash clocks on my 1.1 from standard to VTR all because of rev counter. I seem to remember tapping into the ECU and crank sensor to do it. There is a guide on here somewhere.

I also changed the LED lights on the clocks from green to blue. I seem to remember many circuit boards within the clocks, the job was fiddly.

Personally I’d get a set of dials and customise the faceplate on those.
