Audio help.... - Saxperience

Thinking of (like many have) upgrading the audio in my saxo early on next year. I have a pissing cassette at the moment, and as it's my first car I don't particularly want this for much longer

So, I will be needing a fairly basic setup but something thats decent. If anyone could come up with an idea of what to look for, and what i'd exactly need that would be great. I don't want a massive overpowered sub or anything- just something that sounds decent and won't break the bank. Cheers

Are you buying the whole lot? What is your budget?

I assume you'll be wanting to do things fairly cheaply as its your first install...

Firstly, you need a headunit, I find the best ones are Kenwood, Pioneer or Alpine. You cant go wrong if you get either of those, just make sure its got the right features if you plan on plugging in your ipod/iphone etc, I'd avoid other makes like Sony, Clarion, Panasonic and the like as they are shite and stupidly hard to use.

Front speakers, you can either go coaxial (1 unit) or component (tweeter is separate) - components work better off an amp but it's really up to you. Again, Alpine stuff is good, or JBL is very good value (I swear by it) so again you cant go wrong if you get pretty much anything JBL. (front saxo speakers are 13cm)

In terms of a sub and amp I'd suggest looking on www.caraudiosecurity.com at their sub and amp packages (try not to get a sub with a built in amp), again JBL would be your best bet on a budget and in my opinion are bassy as hell and can take a hammering! Either 1x10" or 1x12" will be plenty enough bass if set up correctly.

Don't really want to be spending much more over around £150...But am flexible to things part by part. Maybe get the headunit and some front speakers, then work on amp/sub at a later stage..That possible?

You could easily get a brand new headunit and some front speakers for £150, even less if you buy used.
There are some right bargains about on second hand subs, JBL 1000watts can be had off ebay for £20, then get a cheap amp for £20-30.

If you have a mate that knows what they're doing that would be your best bet.

Or give it a go yourself, it's all easier than you think and has probably been covered on here before. I'm sure there's guides/threads kicking around somewhere on how to remove doorcards and how to feed through your amp wires.

Yep, I'd definitely bid on that if it stays within your price range. JL (the make of the sub) is a pretty good make.

Just bear in mind you will need to buy an amp wiring kit aswell which are around £20

But yeh I'd keep an eye on that auction.

Buying good Headunit is everything. With good headunit you can make very nice sound on stock speakers. After that you can upgrade step by step. And when you buy headunit you must buy eurojack because i think that your hu don't have eurojack.

Well yes a decent headunit would be a good start, as its the "heart" of your system. Saying that my current Alpine one was one of the cheaper ones (cheapest probably lol) at £90 brand new and its just fine for me and has been for the last couple of years.
As long as you don't buy a shit make it will sound just fine!

Go to halfords at the min they have some edge components for a tenner and some discontinued head units if your on a tight budget mate

If OP buys a new headunit, it will come with iso lead anyway lol.

Stock car doesn't have ISO connector. If he have cassette player than 99% have just wires.
