Quite a few people seem to be changing to 205 gti gears for boost. Anyone on here running a turbo got these? Whats it like compared to the normal 1.6
8v picasso gears of the BE box?
Does changing the gear ratios all depend on the turbo, etc?

Don't know anyone personally running the 205 gears except Martin. Who's "quite a few"?
This is what we're chatting about about - best gears for which solution. In my case just a final drive change is hopefully ok whilst Martin changed a few cogs too

1.9gti has the longest 1st gear ratio and is abit closer than most of the others, irc

Sonny, colin and another lad running a similar spec as them 2 called matt have all just recently changed to these gears.
Something i may look at doing.

Ah that's why i don't know about it. I tend not to follow anything they do for obvious reasons.

I'll find the pages on threads about it for you.
Id like to get some knowledge on more detail things like this, always good to know if wanting to make your spec work better together as a whole to equal a faster/better setup car.

Most be 1st gears are the same ratios, usually 3.14 or 2.92, but you have the fd that can change the total gearing a lot, the rest of a 205 gti gearset is near identical whether it is 1.6 or 1.9, plus the fd.

Well I'll change to the 205 derv FD and see what's what after that. It's not like it's a huge ballache to change the box, and thanks to the BE diff, I can modify the ratios in a box off the car whilst the car remains usable, then swap boxes (and diff) in an afternoon.
We'll see what happens

no moding needed, just swap the 2 shafts and 2 slectors in to the BE4 bellhousing and then fit the 6 speed end cap, the only bit i havent swapped over is the cable to allow you to select reverse although there is the mount needed on the BE4 bellhousing if you wanted it.
ive put a buzzer on the reverse light switch that will sound in the car when reverse is selected so i cant get the wrong gear at the pod lol
as for hitting the wheel, it doesnt stick out further than the chassis leg
you could prob get away without cutting as much as i did

Martin, thanks for doing this.. I'm glad we had a chat about it on FB and you decided to do it! There were lots of people who said it won't work and you will get problems with wheel clearance which I knew was a load of bollocks.
6speed ftw
To choose the correct ratios/FD first you must decide what the car is used for.. Always 6speed is better than 5spd for performance.

once its up and running ill have a play with the gears but i did that with the diesel ones and it runined the way the car drove so will see how this works 1st

no, 6 is not always better
nice work, have you tried it yet?
Looks like it would still work with the Satchell relocated kit (towards passenger side by 20mm to make driveshafts more equal and move r/h cv away from chassis leg)
there's a few different FD's on this website

5.6666!!! 5.23, 4.75, 4.42, so nothing much really any good for Road/high power turbo use due to the standard gearset, 1st would be totally useless.

Martins BE hybrid may be the way to go with mine, certainly cheaper than a Quaife cluster.

Are the 205 FD's not compatible with the gti6 gearkits then?
I like the idea of the 6 speed box of course I do (who wouldn't) but if 175+mph is achievable with a 5 speed, that's all I need tbh.

It's not just that, 175mph is achievable with 2 gears but you wouldn't want that for obvious reasons.
Shorter gearing will make your turbo feel more responsive. Closer ratios will make you faster... Sometimes the difference in a 500rpm rev drop between changes can cost you 20-30-40bhp.. So if the car is built to go fast then gearing is as important than all these fancy engine internals

nope, the only two standard 6 speed BE fd's you can use is a 3.95 and 4.06 from gti6 boxes, the shafts are longer to allow 6 gears to be used, there are aftermarket but as I illustrated above they're intended for rallying so MUCH shorter, not a bad price though.
with a turbo, I'd hope you'd have a much wider power band, meaning less time lost from gear shifting, of course if you want to go stupidly pointless speeds in a french tin can with a load of scaffolding in it, then yeah probably a good idea

What would these ratio's be like??.
1st 14x34 , 2nd 16x31 , 3rd 19x28 , 4th 21x26 , 5th 23x25 , fd 12x68
And why are they measured in a differnt way?. Can it be converted to the normal way?
