8V Cam choices.
Hi all
Have been thinking of running a 465 (i think) cam in my 8v in the future (i know ill need standalone ecu to run it)
But i have been told that it can run on standard pistons if the head hasn't been skimmed much. Ive just had mine skimmed but i think it the only time its ever been done. I don't want to risk running the cam and hitting the pistons so whats my options?
Find out how much the head has been skimmed by?
Or
Take it to someone like Sandy and get the pistons slightly cut out.
Any more ideas? Please no comments about chucking a 16v in there.
Forgot to say its a 98 Black top Vtr.

you could fit the cam, turn the engine over a load by hand, if it cleans then fine if it catches buy a thicker hg and then check again and check your compressons, or get hardcore cams bodies and hi comp pistons and send it to sandy brown.
regs to ecu i think chipwizards can map it you mate

Thanks bud. I didnt really want to touch the bottom end. sandy said you can run one depending on how much is skimmed. Ill be running it with Gsxr bodies, Sandys manifold, Some head work and a Predator Ecu.

take it the 465 are like 708 ph3's but 8v? not very up on the 8v cams etc.
i was in simlare position when i rebuilt my vts engine, ph3's clear the pistons just, but i needed the head skimming and was unsure if it had been skimmed be4 etc, had it skimed and got +1 repair size gaskit when i fit cas will just turn it over by hand few times make sure there clear, as it could of been skimmed befor then get compression test on it.

How much power can you get realistically not blown from an 8v ?
My mate would like to know.

depends how much your willing to spend as with the 16v, sandy brown dose 230bhp from a 16v but will cost you about 6grand for the engine.

I've done a couple circa 170bhp atmo 8v engines, flexible and well mannered engines, not unruly troublesome beasts!
My top 16v TU engines are just over 220bhp and 150lbft now (calibrated+corrected engine dyno proven), genuine 230bhp is still some way off! But they are over £9k I'm afraid (with management and dyno run in and tested etc).

Sje on here currently has 160 from a 8v rallye.
That not forged either. Just a wild cam, headwork & bodies

Oh Yer.
To get that extra 10bhp, looking at a wilder cam, forged internals, and possibly more headwork.
