Indeed as I have just been trying to find this out myself and thanks to the help I got in my other thread and this I now know.
The main this that helps is knowing the dipstick and ecu are always the give away

It seems that my engine is a complete mix of the two silver tops :/
My engine has the dipstick in the position of the 98hp and also has the same inlet manifold
Although its only a 1 plug and has an under car Cat
is that 90hp or 98hp?

My vtr is a confused vtr, its not an Irish import (checked with the dvla) and its a 1400 3plug piece of shit 'w' plate
Bit off topic will the 90bhp engine fit in and run with having to change the loom or ecu and the other bits that are needed as its awfully low oil pressure and i cant be bothered to repair it so im going to change it

Just wondering about the exhaust differences, will a centre pipe from a 1999 vtr fit a 2002 vtr ?
