car using oil
basically i checked my car oil level and it was at max ( had a service 4000 miles ago) and have been on a 300 mile trip today so i thought id check the oil again once it had settled and seems like its used quater of the oil however ive seen no excessive smoke, no blue smoke and no smell of oil. what could be the cause? also im giving fresh oil change and filter in aout 2 weeks once ive got time.

possible the engine was recently run? some of the oil may have still been in the top end, on a 300 mile drive if it is burning oil there will be a mist on the boot lid you can draw in with your finger

Might be head gasket. Check there in no oil leaks just above the alternator mount. Very common place for the gasket to go. And the oil just leaks over very slowly.

I don't think it's head gasket , no mayo under the cap and car running very smoothly. But I'll check if there's oil around the altanator mount cheers

If it's loosing oil and is still running fine, it's a gasket gone somewhere. Have a look around rocker cover or sump gasket, or maybe even around the oil filter.

Spray some gunk(degreaser)around the engine then clean off, take the car for a run then put some newspaper under the car overnight. Then you`ll see if its leaking.

Im really confused now lol my car is sat on a level surface, i always check the oil while the engine is cold, i do 1 reading it shows 3 quaters full, i do a 2nd reading then its full and i give it another reading and its hard to tell because it covers 3 quaters of full then abit is slightly scatterd to full mark but the other half is dry...if you understand so im always getting diffrent readings... ahhh

Make sure you wipe the dipstick every time and press it all the way down.
