Mocal sandwich plate centre bolt
Soooo, I didn't realise I needed a different one, turns out I do, a shorter one due to the size of the mocal one v the standard one, but what's the threading on a phase 2 vts? There's loads on eBay 3/4 or m18 or m20?

M20 sweetie!
When I bought my cooler I left the original piece of threaded insert in #4 and used a shorter #2 that was provided with the sandwich plate. Looking at your thread looks like you have a #23.

Thread steal, but just confirming that part #4 is the threaded part that the oil filter sits on? Like you would use when doing the oil filter relocation?

shitroen or pug there not expensive
one recomendation is thread lock the insert into the mocal adaptor then screw that into the block rather than the other way as the mocal adaptor is made of monkey metal and break very easily so dont over tighten it

This. The mocal sandwich plates are fucking WANK. I had mine self destruct on the rollers (NOT through overtightening). Thanks a fucking bunch mocal, you pricks.
(I now don't use a mocal sandwich plate or mushroom because of that).
eg:
Cost me dyno time, and a LOT of apologies for pouring 3 litres of oil over a rolling road. I was not Mr Popular...

I'd disagree, I would use thread lock on both ends but would put the thread into the block first then put the sandwich plate on and then the new mocal fitting!
Purely because when I attempted to put the threaded piece (No4) into the mocal fitting it would go in so far that there then wasn't enough thread to hold it into the block properly (1-2 threads!!!), but doing it the other way it will bottom out in the block and leave plenty of thread for the mocal fitting!

Try putting the thread in first Muzz and see if there is enough thread to go in the block safely if you think that will be easier. I'm just saying with the parts I was supplied that it wouldn't have worked the other way.
When I put the threaded piece in I used some fancy grips with rubber jaws.
As long as there is sufficient thread in both the mocal fitting and the block it shouldn't matter. I think the key factor is to not over tighten the fittings, a little tighter than you'd put a filter on really. They aren't hub nuts, don't go wild with a breaker bar.

real men don't use mocal anyway
I've just changed to this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Torques-Oi...-/160905224937
Which includes nice threaded holes for oil pressure sensors etc too
You will, of course, still need the threaded bit to screw the mushroom into.

I only went mocal as I wanted a thermostatic one and didn't want to mount an inline thermostat. I have heard a few people grumble but I haven't had any troubles.
